Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field is required.
  • Three to seven years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment is required; refrigeration, water treatment, or food-grade equipment experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management System requirements and audit processes is required.
  • A proven record of leading structured root cause analysis investigations through verified corrective action closure is required, with examples of root cause analysis reports and Corrective and Preventive Action outcomes.
  • Hands-on proficiency with 8D, 5-Why, Ishikawa/fishbone, fault tree analysis, and DMAIC methodologies is required.
  • The ability to troubleshoot electromechanical systems, including refrigeration cycles, water flow systems, and electrical controls, through logical, hypothesis-driven investigation is required.
  • Proficiency with FMEA, PPAP, SPC, MSA, control plans, and inspection methods is required.
  • Experience with GD&T and precision measurement instruments, including calipers, CMMs, and pressure gauges, is required.
  • Familiarity with NSF/ANSI certification processes and water-contact material requirements is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, including the ability to translate technical root cause analysis findings into corrective action plans for engineering, operations, and executive audiences.
  • The employee must use required personal protective equipment on the manufacturing floor, including safety glasses, steel-toe footwear, and hearing protection where applicable.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods during floor audits and inspections.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce Quality Management System documentation, including standard operating procedures, work instructions, control plans, and inspection criteria, in alignment with ISO 9001 standards.
  • Lead internal and external audits and coordinate third-party regulatory inspections involving NSF/ANSI, UL, and applicable EPA/FDA compliance reviews for water-contact materials.
  • Manage document control systems and ensure quality records are current, accessible, and properly retained.
  • Develop and execute inspection and test plans for refrigeration components, ice-making assemblies, water filtration systems, and compressor units.
  • Apply statistical process control methodologies to monitor manufacturing processes and identify variation trends before nonconformance occurs.
  • Perform and oversee Failure Mode and Effects Analysis for new and existing products and develop and track risk-mitigation actions.
  • Lead structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis for in-process defects, warranty returns, field failures, and customer complaints.
  • Conduct hands-on inspection and data analysis of refrigeration and ice-system failures, including compressor faults, refrigerant leaks, ice bridging, water-system contamination, evaporator fouling, and electrical control malfunctions.
  • Use containment, symptom mapping, data collection, hypothesis testing, and verified root-cause identification before corrective actions are implemented.
  • Use 8D reports, 5-Why analysis, Ishikawa diagrams, fault tree analysis, DMAIC, and is/is-not analysis according to the failure type and complexity.
  • Distinguish root causes, contributing factors, and detection failures, and ensure corrective actions address all three layers.
  • Perform or coordinate failure analysis of returned units and components, including teardown and inspection of compressors, ice-making mechanisms, water inlet valves, sensors, and control boards; document findings with photographs, measurements, and technical reports.
  • Analyze warranty and field-failure data to identify systemic trends, failure patterns, and early warning signals, escalate repeat failures, and drive cross-functional response teams.
  • Develop and maintain a structured Corrective and Preventive Action system and ensure each root cause analysis results in a formal 8D or equivalent report with effectiveness checks at 30, 60, and 90 days.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Service teams to gather process data, design documentation, and field observations for root-cause determination.
  • Lead or facilitate rapid-response quality reviews with 24-to-48-hour containment for critical customer escapes or field safety concerns, including product holds, sorting, and customer communication.
  • Build and maintain a knowledge base of failure modes, root-cause analysis outcomes, and corrective actions for water refrigeration and ice-production systems.
  • Qualify new suppliers through on-site audits, PPAP submissions, and first-article inspection reviews for compressors, heat exchangers, water valves, and refrigerants.
  • Monitor supplier performance metrics, including PPM, OTIF, and corrective-action closure rates, and facilitate corrective-action plans for underperforming vendors.
  • Partner with Procurement to evaluate and approve alternative components while maintaining compliance with NSF/ANSI 61 and other water-contact safety standards.
  • Ensure ice and water-contact products meet NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372 certification requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with EPA Section 608 refrigerant-handling regulations and environmental health and safety standards, including OSHA and ASHRAE requirements.
  • Track regulatory requirements and advise Engineering and Product Development on their impact on current and future product lines.
  • Collaborate with Research and Development and Engineering on design-for-quality principles during New Product Introduction phases.
  • Present quality performance metrics, key performance indicators, and improvement roadmaps to senior leadership monthly and quarterly.
  • Mentor and train manufacturing technicians and line leads on quality standards, measurement techniques, and defect identification.
Desired Qualifications
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer or Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt certification.
  • Formal training or certification in 8D problem-solving, DMAIC, or advanced root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Experience performing or overseeing teardown and failure analysis of refrigeration components, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, water valves, and control boards.
  • Familiarity with refrigeration diagnostics using manifold gauge sets, pressure-temperature charts, superheat/subcooling analysis, and leak-detection equipment.
  • Experience with ERP/MES systems such as SAP or Oracle and quality management software such as Intelex, MasterControl, or ETQ.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE refrigeration standards and EPA Section 608 technician certification.
  • Exposure to commercial or industrial ice-machine design, chiller systems, or water-purification equipment.
  • Experience managing Corrective and Preventive Action systems with effectiveness verification and long-term recurrence tracking.
