Requirements
  • Completion of education equivalent to high school; graduation from an accredited phlebotomy training program satisfies this requirement.
  • Completion of an accredited course of study in phlebotomy.
  • Phlebotomy certification through ASCP, ASPT, NCA, or an equivalent agency is required within 12 months of hire.
  • At least 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain valid and active Georgia licensure or certification applicable to the job eligibility requirements.
  • Ability to comply with COVID-19 vaccination or approved religious or health exemption requirements.
  • Ability to pass applicable criminal background and fingerprint checks and required pre-employment and post-employment drug screenings.
  • Ability to wear function-appropriate personal protective equipment and comply with workplace safety policies.
Responsibilities
  • Identify patients, draw blood, handle, label, and transport specimens to the laboratory, and enter data into the computer system in accordance with applicable guidelines and organizational policies.
  • Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups.
  • Handle telephone requests courteously, accurately, and confidentially.
  • Collect and receive scheduled or requested specimens promptly.
  • Order appropriate tests in the computer system accurately and promptly.
  • Enter patient information accurately and timely.
  • Maintain test trays in sanitary and properly supplied condition.
  • Determine required supplies and prepare test materials before each test.
  • Verify patient identification against order labels before testing.
  • Label all specimens accurately.
  • Dispose of used needles according to approved procedures.
  • Report changes in patient condition to appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Adapt to sudden scheduling changes.
  • Complete paperwork and reports accurately and on time while maintaining a clean, organized work area.
  • Assist medical laboratory technicians and medical technologists as needed.
  • Maintain the filing system for patient orders and results.
  • Distribute specimens to appropriate testing areas.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties as needed and other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current phlebotomy certification.
  • One year of experience as a phlebotomist.
