Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • The ability to read, write, and speak English is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Graduation from a formal medical assistant training program or at least three years of medical assistant experience is required.
  • Applicants without formal medical assistant training may qualify with at least three years of related experience in a comparable role, such as Licensed Practical Nurse, medical student, Emergency Medical Technician, or paramedic.
  • The role requires direct patient contact in a healthcare environment and the ability to walk and stand intermittently throughout the day.
  • The ability to lift and position patients and lift supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
Responsibilities
  • Work under general supervision in an ambulatory setting in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Follow practice, clinic, or office workflow protocols to maximize quality and efficiency.
  • Perform pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating patient records with recent test results, consults, correspondence, and other information, determine needed services according to protocols, and communicate point-of-care reminders to providers through the electronic medical record.
  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment by escorting them to exam rooms, taking vital signs, weighing patients, recording information in charts, entering chief complaints, completing medication reconciliation and histories, documenting health concerns, recording pain scores, and completing chart questionnaires.
  • Ensure effective patient flow throughout the practice, clinic, or office.
  • Review health maintenance and chronic illness services and perform or order them according to protocols and standing orders.
  • Perform testing procedures including blood pressure measurement, electrocardiograms, pulse oximetry, hemoglobin A1c, glucose testing, urinalysis, urine human chorionic gonadotropin testing, rapid strep testing, and other point-of-care tests.
  • Record allergy, medication, medical, surgical, and family history information in patient charts and initiate pharmacy benefits verification.
  • Assist providers with physical examinations and perform procedures using aseptic techniques and standard procedures.
  • Administer vaccines and place purified protein derivative tests according to practice or clinic protocol.
  • Complete post-visit follow-up work, including labeling, recording, and sending blood and other specimens to the laboratory.
  • Follow up to ensure laboratory results are entered in the medical record, track orders and results, contact patients regarding laboratory and order reminders, update the electronic medical record, and immediately report abnormal laboratory results to the physician or nurse.
  • Follow up on specialty-care and other-service referrals, track consultation reports, update the electronic medical record, and contact patients regarding referral outreach and reminders.
  • Check for pending prescription refills.
  • Clean and prepare examination rooms between patients and for subsequent appointments.
  • Explain programs, procedures, and preparation requirements for tests and examinations; educate patients about care coordination and prudent emergency-room use; and document identified barriers.
  • Schedule tests and follow-up appointments, preregister patients, verify demographic and insurance information, and obtain prior authorizations as needed.
  • Monitor and order supplies, keep rooms stocked, clean medical equipment, report broken or missing equipment, check medication and supply expiration dates, and remove and report expired items.
  • Assist with administrative office duties, including mailing reminders and other letters to patients.
  • Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
