Requirements
  • Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification, such as St. John’s Ambulance OFA1 or equivalent.
  • Able to obtain RCMP Reliability and Public Works Reliability Clearance.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Meet RCMP-V4 visual standards; eyeglasses are permitted.
  • Able to bend at the waist and climb stairs without restrictions or assistive devices.
  • Able to use both hands and occasionally manipulate or lift up to 20 kilograms.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Able to remain in control under trying conditions and maintain discretion.
  • Able to work effectively with others and independently.
  • Willing to undergo detention guard training, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training and semi-annual refresher training.
  • Conscientious, enthusiastic, and reliable.
Responsibilities
  • Observe and check prisoners frequently and irregularly, including through Closed-Circuit Television when applicable.
  • Assist RCMP members with prisoner searches when required; physical handling and movement of prisoners are conducted by the RCMP.
  • Organize meals, record prisoner activity, and maintain the prisoner activity logbook.
  • Monitor prisoners while they are in hospital when required.
  • Maintain cell cleanliness and tidiness when cells are vacated or arrange janitorial assistance.
  • Record and report cell damage or required repairs.
  • Search cells before occupation and when cells are vacated.
  • Maintain cellblock security by ensuring cell doors remain locked.
  • Ensure cellblock keys are tagged and stored safely.
  • Secure all personal effects removed from prisoners.
  • Monitor fire safety and remain fully conversant with fire orders.
  • Handle and dispense laundry items.
  • Under RCMP Officer supervision, dispense approved prescription medications to persons in custody.
  • Monitor prisoners who have or are suspected of having suicidal tendencies, in accordance with RCMP Unit Supplemental Orders.
  • Perform escort duties as required for specific detachments.
  • Perform other detachment-specific duties set out in the Unit Supplemental Orders.
