Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a similar field is required.
  • Three years of relevant experience are required.
  • The ability to write and edit content based on the target audience is required.
  • The ability to provide context and reshape material in a fast-paced, high-demand environment is required.
  • Understanding and compliance with HIPAA requirements and University of Rochester Medical Center policies for protecting patient privacy and other confidential information are required.
  • Knowledge of or experience contributing to social media platforms is required.
  • Strong organization and project management skills are required.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including comfort speaking with all levels of faculty and staff and in front of groups, are required.
  • The ability to work independently and within a collaborative team is required.
  • Occasional night or weekend work is required.
  • Availability for rotating on-call overnight or weekend social media monitoring, approximately once every six weeks, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and write clear, audience-appropriate content for the School of Nursing's publications and digital channels, including magazine stories, news releases, and web features.
  • Interview faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners to identify and shape newsworthy stories that advance strategic priorities, reputation, and recruitment goals.
  • Adapt content for multiple formats and platforms while ensuring accuracy, consistency with key messages, and alignment with editorial standards.
  • Implement social media and digital content plans supporting engagement, recruitment, and visibility goals.
  • Manage day-to-day content creation, including video and photography, for the School of Nursing's primary social media platforms.
  • Maintain a content calendar, monitor activity, and report basic engagement metrics.
  • Collaborate with communications and marketing colleagues to align posts with broader campaigns, create simple branded graphics, and contribute content for medical-center and University-level channels.
  • Assist with recurring publications and email communications, including monthly and weekly newsletters and targeted email updates.
  • Coordinate content gathering and routing, provide input on layout and imagery, and proofread materials for clarity, tone, and adherence to brand standards.
  • Partner with designers, photographers, vendors, and internal resources to keep projects on schedule and within scope.
  • Support media relations activities and leadership communications designed to increase local and regional visibility.
  • Identify and develop newsworthy story ideas, draft media materials, and coordinate media interviews.
  • Support senior school leaders at presentations, conferences, and public events.
  • Track media mentions and placements, maintain current media log entries, and help ensure consistent and accurate responses to media inquiries.
  • Serve as assistant editor for the biannual alumni magazine by coordinating photo shoots, working with graphic designers, editing copy, and coordinating with printers on production and distribution.
  • Provide additional communications support as needed, including event promotion, basic website content updates, photography coordination, and special projects and priority initiatives.
  • Participate in team meetings and planning sessions and contribute ideas to improve communications processes and outcomes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Some experience with HTML programming, content management systems, data analysis, metrics presentations, photo and video capture/editing, and/or graphic design.
