Requirements
  • A high school diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Knowledge of standards, requirements, and federal and state regulations applicable to laboratory animal care is required.
  • Knowledge of normal behavior and physical condition is required to evaluate the well-being of laboratory animals.
  • Knowledge of factors involved in the transmission of animal diseases and the roles of animal care technicians, animal health technicians, and research staff in preventing disease transmission is required.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow posted Standard Operating Procedures is required.
  • Ability to determine the sex of common laboratory animals and identify housing biosecurity, sanitation, and sterilization needs is required.
  • Ability to inspect caging, physical plant, and other equipment for conditions affecting animal well-being and staff safety is required.
  • Knowledge of attendance, personal hygiene, hazardous-substance handling, safe equipment use, and institutional policies is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine husbandry services in one or more animal housing rooms containing various species of laboratory animals.
  • Provide general and technical assistance to supervisors, investigators, animal health staff, and veterinary staff.
  • Support Vivarium common service areas and functions, including the cagewash room, waste and trash removal, and sterile supply.
  • Provide husbandry services for assigned laboratory animal species and ensure that standards and conditions for their proper care and maintenance are met.
  • Observe animals daily for signs of ill health or other abnormalities and evaluate their overall well-being.
  • Follow special instructions involving deviations from Standard Operating Procedures related to animal health, biosecurity, cage sanitation, or veterinary care.
  • Maintain animal and supply inventories, animal room or cagewash logs, and special charges.
  • Prepare special reports when requested.
  • Maintain accurate individual animal and project identification records using established methods.
  • Inspect caging, physical plant, and other equipment, report problems affecting animal well-being or staff safety, and follow through to ensure reported problems are resolved.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • General experience with animals in a work environment or a research environment is preferred.
