Staff Cell Lifetime Modeling Engineer

Job Description

As a member of the Cell Modeling team, this person will be responsible to lead lithium-ion cell degradation modeling within Tesla. The role entails developing and managing degradation models for all the different cell chemistries used in Tesla Electric Vehicle & Energy Storage products. 

Job Responsibilities

• Develop and calibrate cell degradation models for different cell chemistries, based on test data in conjunction with electrochemistry knowledge
• Develop cell degradation mechanisms through analysis and interpretation of lab cycling and storage data
• Guide the development of higher fidelity degradation models for Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage products
• Interface with cross functional teams to develop relevant inputs/outputs for degradation simulations and forecasts
• Advance the overall capability and fidelity of cell degradation modeling at Tesla
• Lead a small team of Modeling Engineers

Job Requirements

• Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent experience
• Strong background in numerical methods, especially in optimization and numerical solutions of ODEs and PDEs
• 5+ years’ experience in developing empirical or physics-based models of dynamic systems, preferably in lithium-ion batteries and degradation mechanisms
• 5+ years’ programming and numerical modeling experience in MATLAB or Python
• Strong communication and cross-functional interaction skills
• Experience working with lithium-ion batteries is preferred
• Technical leadership experience is strongly desired
