Requirements
- An Associate’s degree, diploma, or Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an approved or accredited nursing program is required before employment.
- Evidence of graduation from an accredited or approved School of Nursing is required, demonstrated by a transcript showing program completion or a letter from the program director confirming completion and eligibility to take boards.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX and obtainment of an RN license are required; NCLEX completion must occur within 8 weeks of graduation.
- BLS certification is required by completion of core orientation.
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment to establish an appropriate plan of action.
- Ability to communicate constantly both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to sustain alertness and concentration during interactive, repetitive, detailed, and computer-based work.
- Ability to regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier pushing, pulling, or handling tasks.
- Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Responsibilities
- Follow the professional nurse core orientation pathway under direct RN supervision and in accordance with organizational, unit, and Nurse Practice Act policies.
- Participate in managing patients’ care throughout their hospital stay by using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge.
- Coordinate care provided by other professionals and delegate selected nursing tasks within the scope of practice and the abilities of patient care assistants and universal support assistants.
- Provide selected physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice, considering patient acuity and care complexity.
- Document and communicate each shift the patient’s response to care, resource consumption, and anticipated needs.
- Assess patients’ physical and developmental needs under direct RN supervision.
- Analyze assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs.
- Document nursing histories and age-appropriate physical and emotional needs and strengths for assigned patients.
- Develop plans of care for assigned patients based on assessment findings.
- Manage assigned patient care plans by organizing and delegating therapeutic interventions and evaluating their effectiveness.
- Measure temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to assess patient condition and identify deviations from normal.
- Observe patients, record significant conditions and reactions, implement appropriate interventions, and notify the supervisor or physician of patient conditions, drug or treatment reactions, and significant incidents.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to approved nursing techniques and policies.
- Explain procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation and understanding and reduce apprehension.
- Prepare equipment and assist physicians during patient treatments and examinations.
- Maintain awareness of patients’ comfort and safety needs.
- Initiate patient education plans according to individualized patient needs and physician instructions or hospital policy, including patient and family instruction.
- Respond to life-saving situations according to nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Manage discharge planning and preparation for assigned patients.
- Manage personal, unit, and hospital resources effectively.
- Participate in department or unit performance-improvement activities, including patient-care and pathway-documentation self-audits.
- Follow and document the New Grad Pathway and NCLEX preparation as part of professional development.
- Contribute to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
- Function effectively in the patient care assistant role until successful NCLEX completion and transition to the RN position.
