  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required by completion of core orientation.

  • The role requires considerable standing or walking, lifting light-weight objects of 20 pounds or less, and assisting with heavier patient-lifting and moving tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Provide education and support to breastfeeding families under the supervision of the Breastfeeding Center and Milk Bank System Manager of Nursing.
  • Implement the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes in accordance with the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
  • Provide independent and collaborative assistance, teaching, and support to breastfeeding families with the perinatal health care team.
  • Assess medical conditions of nursing mothers and refer them to medical providers for breastfeeding-related issues when necessary.
  • Evaluate newborn outcomes and verify growth parameters and developmental milestones while newborns are breastfeeding.
  • Provide follow-up to breastfeeding patients through phone calls and outpatient consultations after hospital care.
  • Assess patients' learning needs, plan and implement education processes, and develop individualized teaching plans.
  • Complete one-to-one patient education sessions and refer patients or families as indicated.
  • Provide patients with feedback regarding their progress.
  • Document all gathered data, care provided, and interventions in EPIC.
  • Frequently evaluate patient and family progress during the teaching process and obtain feedback regarding comprehension.
  • Meet and greet patients, handle telephone duties, schedule patient appointments, and write letters and memos.
  • Identify patient education needs through data collection and analysis.
  • Orient new staff to patient education activities, roles, and responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Assist Breastfeeding Center visitors with maternity belt and bra fitting, general questions, and cash register functions.
  • Input data specific to the Breastfeeding Center.
  • Assist students with their learning experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience working with new mothers and newborns preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification preferred, or the required designation must be obtained within two years of hire.
