Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a master's degree in Nursing.
- Hold national certification from one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers.
- Hold or be eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the state of practice.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification; additional advanced life support training may be required at the department's discretion.
- Demonstrate proficiency with computers.
- Lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing more than 40 pounds.
- Work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for behavioral medicine patients and their families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and emergent evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with behavioral medicine faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum covered by the APP's education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex behavioral medicine situations and facilitate appropriate interventions in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate behavioral medicine patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory settings.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making and in identifying, evaluating, and managing individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for behavioral medicine patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record in accordance with approved hospital policies and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in behavioral medicine practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to behavioral medicine patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret behavioral medicine data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
- Assist behavioral medicine faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.

- Acute care or behavioral medicine experience is preferred.
