A DAY IN THE LIFE

The Project GIS Scientist position will assist a multidisciplinary team of accomplished Cultural Resources specialists on a variety of projects in California. The position is remote, but the candidate must be available to work hours in the Pacific Time Zone.

The Project GIS Scientist, under supervision from Senior Analysts/Managers, is responsible for working with spatial and tabular data in a variety of formats (.gdb, .shp, .kmz, .dwg [AutoCAD], Field Maps/Collector/Survey123, field notes, etc.). Further, the Project GIS Designer will work collaboratively with Montrose staff to create maps, exhibits, and figures to support technical reports.

As a key member of the team, this role is expected to:

• Create spatial data from multiple non-spatial sources and formats using digitization and georeferencing techniques demonstrating a firm understanding of geographic coordinate systems, datums and projections.
• Integrate new data into existing geodatabases, convert/crosswalk attributes between multiple domain schemas.
• Utilize GIS applications to examine the locations, attributes, and relationships of features in spatial data through overlay and other analytical techniques.
• Configure and troubleshoot various GPS devices and mobile data collection applications.
• Utilize GIS applications to perform advanced spatial analysis or data conversion and manipulation. 
• Write and use applications and scripts to create automated geoprocessing workflows.
• Develop Web maps, apps, and dashboards for use on ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and Portal in conjunction ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times
• Exercise safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs
• Participate in the company’s continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts
• Keep up-to-date and current on industry trends by completing formal training, reviewing professional publications, and attend professional workshops
• Perform other duties as assigned

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science, Biology, Anthropology, Environmental Sciences or a closely related field requiring equivalent coursework in geographic information systems.
• 5+ years’ experience as a GIS Technician/Analyst in a professional services firm
• Experience in the Environmental Consulting industry is a plus
• Basic understanding of Biological and Cultural Resources
• Knowledge of the fundamental principles, practices, and techniques of GIS
• Experience with ESRI Product/Application Suite: ArcGIS Desktop and Extensions, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, Collector for ArcGIS, Survey 123, Python and coding
• Working knowledge of programming languages such as: Python, JSON, JavaScript, html, etc. is a plus
• Strong written and oral communication skills for all levels of technical understanding
• Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite
• Knowledge of computer aided software (Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, etc.)
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to present to supervisors.
• Organizational skills and attention to detail.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee may be required to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, and is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. There may be occasional lifting (overhead, waist level) from the floor of supplies and materials weighing no more than 30 pounds. The work may involve some bending, standing or walking. Out of office site visits could potentially have more strenuous physical demands.

The work environment will vary greatly depending on nature of assigned tasks. Possible work environments could include normal office working conditions in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. The position may involve local travel as needed.
