Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent experience is required.
  • Experience in laboratory management or clinical research laboratory operations is required.
  • Strong knowledge of specimen processing, storage, and shipping protocols is required.
  • Proficiency in laboratory equipment maintenance and inventory management is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams is required.
  • IATA Certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily activities of the Clinical Research Unit laboratory.
  • Oversee the processing, storage, and shipping of laboratory specimens.
  • Maintain ongoing tracking of all specimens stored in the clinical research laboratory.
  • Monitor, maintain, and ensure the proper function of all laboratory equipment.
  • Manage inventory and order laboratory supplies.
  • Assume responsibility for the on-call schedule for freezer alarm coverage, including -80 freezers.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all laboratory interactions with study teams.
  • Provide training and oversight to staff assisting with specimen processing.
  • Manage laboratory effort for community visits under the CTSA grant, collaborating with staff at Howard University, MedStar, and the VA as appropriate.
  • Assist nurses with clinical research and standard-of-care tasks when laboratory workload allows.
  • Perform vital signs, electrocardiograms, and phlebotomy.
  • Assist with subject transport as needed.
  • Support the pickup and delivery of drugs from research and main pharmacies.
  • Collaborate directly with nursing staff on the Clinical Research Unit in patient care support and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide laboratory support to the Clinical Research Unit and SEPCOM-approved protocols.
  • Work directly with nursing staff and clinical research coordinators on the unit.
  • Perform laboratory functions in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Georgetown University Medical Center policies, procedures, and standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree, MS or higher, in a scientific or health-related field.
  • Certification in clinical laboratory science or research compliance.
  • Prior experience in a clinical research setting.
  • Experience supervising or training staff.
  • Familiarity with freezer alarm systems and biorepository management.
