Moderna develops medicines built on messenger RNA (mRNA). Its products use mRNA delivered into cells to instruct them to produce specific proteins that can prevent or treat disease, with vaccines being a primary example. In practice, a dose delivers engineered mRNA into the body, cells translate it into a target protein, and the immune system responds or the protein modulates biology to combat disease. Moderna differentiates itself through its focus on building a whole mRNA medicines platform and in-house capabilities for designing, manufacturing, and scaling mRNA therapies, including rapid development and large-scale production. Its goal is to create a new category of medicines based on mRNA that can improve how diseases are discovered, developed, and treated, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

UK life sciences attracts £3bn investment in 12 months.

UK life sciences attracts £3bn investment in 12 months. 9 July 2026 | Muriel Cozier The UK's Life Sciences Sector Plan, published 12 months ago, has helped to attract more than £3 billion in public and private investment to the country, reflecting international confidence in the UK's world-class science, innovation and health ecosystem, the government has said. Major private investments, which the government describes as "creating hotbeds of innovation and revitalising regional economies up and down the country" include: £300 million backing from AstraZeneca to support its operations in its Cambridge headquarters and a facility in Macclesfield using AI to discover new drugs; Moderna opening its new innovation centre in Harwell with a £1 billion UK R&D investment commitment over the next 10 years; and UCB's £500 million investment in a new world-class R&D hub in Windlesham, Surrey, developing a range of transformative medicines for immunological diseases. The Life Sciences Sector Plan, which is part of the UK government's wider Modern Industrial Strategy, published in July 2025, outlines targeted actions to support world-class research and development, attract investment, grow advanced manufacturing and accelerate health innovation. The plan aims to position the UK as the leading life science economy in Europe by 2035, behind only the US and China. "In its first year, our Life Sciences Sector Plan is delivering cutting-edge treatments to tackle cancer, new opportunities for British businesses to start up and grow, and well-paid jobs that improve lives for families. A thriving life sciences sector is good for NHS patients and good for economic growth across the UK," said Liz Kendell, Science Innovation and Technology Secretary. Pascal Soriot, CEO AstraZeneca said: "2026 has been an important year of tangible action advancing UK life sciences. The first ever increase of the NICE threshold since 1999, the establishment of the Health Data Research Service, and measures to speed up clinical trial delivery. We look forward to working with the government to further strengthen its global competitiveness and build on this momentum." Setting out the achievements in a report: Life Sciences Sector Plan Year One Update, the government said that progress has been made in four specific areas: investment in commercial research and development; access to scale-up capital; patient access; and foreign direct investment. The report notes: "We are also deepening our partnerships with industry to accelerate and deliver tangible benefits for patients. This includes our collaboration with Lilly on the £85 million Obesity Pathway Innovation Programme, and the Respiratory Transformation Partnership with AstraZeneca, Chiesi, GSK and Sanofi, demonstrating how coordinated action across industry and the NHS can test new models of care, improve access to treatment and support better health outcomes." Considering the developments in the global context the report says: "We have done this in a challenging global environment. Competition for investment has intensified, and pressures across supply chains and trade continue to shape the operating environment for businesses. In this context, we have worked closely with industry to provide stability, back innovation and support growth, strengthening our international partnerships and supporting improved market access for UK life sciences exports." The government also highlighted the UK's relationship with the US, saying that the UK-US Pharmaceuticals Arrangement, published in April 2026, secured a commitment to no additional tariffs on pharmaceuticals or medtech exports under US Section 232 or Section 301 investigations for at least three years. "The UK is the first and only country to secure these commitments which provide certainty for UK exporters, reduce supply chain risk and strengthen the UK's position as a globally competitive location for life sciences manufacturing and innovation," the government said. Professor Chris Molloy, CEO of the UK BioIndustry Association (BIA) said: "The US-UK pharmaceutical deal provides a framework for purposeful, evidence-based collaboration between industry and government to improve patient access to the latest innovative medicines. But in an increasingly competitive world, simply going faster than before is not enough. Pace is paramount and we need a fundamental change of gear to accelerate to the front of the pack - particularly in unlocking high-volume domestic finance, from company proof of concept through to scale-up, speeding up clinical trials and patients' access to the latest medicines." FDA committee unanimously backs first vaccine since 2023, Moderna's mRNA flu shot

The FDA's vaccine advisory committee unanimously recommended Moderna's mRNA influenza vaccine, mFlusiva, for adults aged 50 and over on Thursday. This marks the committee's first review of a new vaccine application since 2023. All nine members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee voted in favour despite sustained vaccine criticism from President Trump and HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who previously cancelled nearly $500 million in mRNA vaccine development contracts. The mRNA flu vaccine uses the same technology as COVID-19 vaccines and can be produced faster than traditional flu vaccines. Moderna's phase 3 trial showed the vaccine produced longer-lasting responses and antibodies recognising more flu strains. Over 6 billion mRNA vaccine doses have been administered globally since 2020. If approved, the vaccine could be available next flu season.

Elicio shares slide after pancreatic cancer vaccine falls short in mid-stage study.

Elicio shares slide after pancreatic cancer vaccine falls short in mid-stage study. By Thomson Reuters Jun 15, 2026 | 9:58 AM By Sahil Pandey and Mariam Sunny June 15 (Reuters) - Elicio Therapeutics shares fell about 72% on Monday after the biotech firm's experimental pancreatic cancer vaccine failed to significantly extend the time patients lived without their disease returning, missing the main goal of a mid-stage study. The therapy, ELI-002 7P, is designed to deliver the treatment directly to the lymph nodes to boost immune responses against the cancer. The study enrolled 144 patients with pancreatic cancer linked to mutations in the KRAS gene, who had undergone surgery and standard treatment and were radiographically free of disease at enrolment, the company said. Elicio said about 19% of patients who received the treatment had higher levels of residual disease, increasing the risk of relapse, compared with about 10% in the control group, an imbalance the company said weighed on results. The trial carried the burden of generating the first randomized efficacy data for a KRAS-targeted cancer vaccine and its broad enrolment, regardless of residual disease, "may have blunted the detectable treatment effect," B. Riley analyst Mayank Mamtani said. He added that the "go-forward case" now rests on the late-stage study, which focuses on the patients with lower residual disease and evaluating additional dosing. Moderna is developing a personalized cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, in combination with Merck's blockbuster drug Keytruda in patients with skin cancer. Unlike personalized treatments that must be custom-made for each patient, ELI-002 7P is ready to use, which simplifies manufacturing and reduces cost, Mamtani said. In patients with complete surgical clearance of cancer, representing about 84% of the study population, the therapy achieved an average disease-free survival of 23.8 months versus 12.8 months for control arm, which received only the standard-of-care, Elicio said. The therapy also showed a favorable safety profile, with no treatment-related discontinuations and fewer adverse events than the control arm, supporting potential long-term use and combination approaches, Elicio said. Elicio said it is currently evaluating multiple strategic financing and partnership opportunities. (Reporting by Sahil Pandey and Mariam Sunny in Bengaluru; Editing by Shailesh Kuber)

New AI tool detects brain tumors in minutes instead of days.

New AI tool detects brain tumors in minutes instead of days. Heteros demonstrates how AI-enabled digital pathology can revolutionize medical diagnostics. * Web Desk * June 11, 2026 HEIDELBERG, Germany: Scientists have developed an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of diagnosing brain tumors in just 12 minutes, a dramatic improvement over the current average diagnostic time of about 12 days. Researchers in Heidelberg, Germany, created the AI platform, known as Heteros, which can identify and classify brain tumors with remarkable speed and accuracy. Experts say the technology has the potential to transform the diagnosis of brain cancer worldwide. In recent years, researchers have found that many brain tumors can only be accurately diagnosed through detailed analysis of both their molecular characteristics and microscopic structure. However, such testing is often complex, requires specialized equipment, and can take up to two weeks to produce results. To address these challenges, German scientists developed the AI-powered system to make brain cancer diagnosis faster, simpler, and more accessible. Moritz Gerstung, a researcher at the German Cancer Research Center and one of the leaders of the project, said Heteros demonstrates how AI-enabled digital pathology can revolutionize medical diagnostics. He said the technology allows for rapid and widely accessible diagnostic methods that previously required highly sophisticated technical resources, potentially improving patient care and speeding up treatment decisions for those with brain cancer. Earlier, Researchers at the University of Oxford and pharmaceutical company Moderna have developed an experimental mRNA vaccine aimed at preventing cancer in people at high risk of developing bowel and ovarian cancers. The vaccine, however, has yet to undergo clinical testing and remains in the trial phase. Scientists say the vaccine is based on mRNA technology, which could eventually be used to prevent a wider range of cancers in the future. The research focuses on people with Lynch syndrome, an inherited condition that significantly increases the risk of several cancers, including those affecting the bowel, uterus, ovaries, stomach, pancreas, kidneys and skin.
