Requirements
  • An associate degree in a related field, or one year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Support Technician IV, or four years of related work experience in a health care setting or customer service field, including other laboratory divisions within University of Rochester Medicine such as Client Services, Phlebotomy, or Clinical Trials, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and handle frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of daily operations in the laboratory-specific section of Specimen Management.
  • Provide technical supervision of the section and remain accountable for the professional conduct and technical performance of personnel within the area.
  • Develop and coordinate the rollout of new procedures and evaluate new processing methods for pre-analytical testing.
  • Develop training techniques, detailed training checklists, and competency assessments for new procedures and new hires.
  • Train and coordinate the training of new staff, including program development and revision, orientation, and direction of in-house trainers.
  • Evaluate and communicate new-hire training progress with staff, the training team, and supervisors, using alternative training methods when needed.
  • Maintain and update the training manual and other training materials.
  • Assess work processes and recommend improved methods to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems.
  • Monitor and assess staff competency to identify and reduce errors related to new-hire training and ongoing staff performance.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to coordinate ongoing training and development and remedial training through the Performance Improvement Process.
  • Ensure staff follow laboratory policies and procedures, including safety and security requirements.
  • Channel information to and from the designated shift and work with supervisors and laboratory staff to accomplish departmental and organizational goals.
  • Promote and support a positive team environment within the laboratory.
  • Perform Senior Technician duties and assume bench responsibilities as needed.
  • Maintain the department's technical readiness for regulatory compliance inspections by New York State and other agencies.
  • Oversee technical aspects of Specimen Management, including pre-analytical automation systems at multiple sites, specified middleware, laboratory information test builds, and the Downtime System in conjunction with CLSS.
  • Serve as a technical representative to the CLSS department for pre-analytical support.
  • Oversee departmental Quality Assurance activities, including developing standards, collecting and documenting data, monitoring patient-care quality issues, and documenting quality problems, corrective actions, and follow-up monitoring.
  • Serve as the safety officer, maintain a safe work environment, monitor safety attire and equipment, communicate safety regulations, and identify hazards.
  • Oversee training across multiple sites and ensure training checklists and competencies are current and applied when required.
  • Work with supervisors to ensure staff are trained and competent and prioritized according to operational need.
  • Oversee Reference Laboratory activities, including send-out operations, Quality Assurance monitors, technical support for test builds, and billing support for send-out testing in conjunction with the compliance department.
  • Oversee daily operations for the shift and section and provide support for training, automation, Quality Assurance, and problem resolution.
  • Monitor the use of safety attire and personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in employee competencies and annual reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
