Momentive LMS explained: what it is (and what it isn't) in 2026. January 30, 2026 If you've found yourself searching for "Momentive LMS," you're not alone. In recent years, many associations have received emails about platform changes, acquisitions, or required migrations tied to the Momentive name. That confusion has led many education leaders to ask an understandable question: The short answer: not exactly. The longer and more important answer is below. This guide explains what Momentive actually is, how it became associated with multiple LMS platforms, and what associations should consider if they're currently using or being asked to migrate from a Momentive-owned system. Why people may be searching for "Momentive LMS" The phrase Momentive LMS didn't emerge because Momentive launched a new learning platform. It emerged because of ownership changes, consolidation, and product sunsets affecting well-known association LMSs. When vendors change names, merge platforms, or retire products, buyers naturally turn to Google looking for clarity. In this case, that clarity hasn't been easy to find, which is exactly why this explanation matters. Is Momentive an LMS? No. Momentive is not a learning management system. Momentive is a portfolio company that owns and manages multiple association technology products. It does not offer: * A unified learning platform * A single roadmap across its owned systems * A single AMS/LMS/CMS product all in one Instead, Momentive operates as an umbrella organization over several products that were acquired at different times each with its own history, architecture, and future. How Momentive became associated with LMS platforms. To understand the confusion, it helps to look at the timeline. Before becoming Momentive, the organization operated under the Community Brands name, itself backed by private equity. Under Community Brands, the company owned several association-focused LMS platforms, including: These platforms were widely used by associations for continuing education, webinars, and credentialing programs. The rebrand to Momentive. Community Brands later rebranded as Momentive, reflecting a change in ownership structure (new P/E firm) and portfolio strategy rather than the launch of new technology. * The products did not merge into a single LMS * Each platform continued to operate independently * Customers still licensed specific systems, not "Momentive LMS" The Path LMS acquisition (2025). In 2025, Momentive acquired Path LMS, another association-focused learning platform. This acquisition increased speculation about consolidation and further fueled searches for "Momentive LMS" but again, no unified LMS product was created. Sunset of CrowdWisdom and Freestone. More recently, Momentive announced plans to sunset both CrowdWisdom and Freestone LMS. For associations using these platforms, this introduced: * Forced migration timelines * Uncertainty about long-term support * Questions about future product direction At this point, many organizations began searching for answers and alternatives. What this means for associations using momentive-owned platforms. If your association currently uses (or recently used) CrowdWisdom, Freestone, or Path LMS, the implications are less about branding and more about risk and continuity. Common concerns Oasis LMS hear from associations include: * Being required to migrate platforms on someone else's timeline * Limited influence over product roadmaps * Feature stagnation during ownership transitions * Reduced confidence in long-term platform stability None of these challenges are unique to Momentive, they are common in private equity driven software models. But for education programs that support certification, licensure, and non-dues revenue, the impact can be significant. Key Questions to ask if you're evaluating your next LMS. If Momentive-related changes have prompted you to reassess your LMS, this is a good moment to step back and evaluate what really matters. Associations should prioritize platforms that offer: * Association-native CE and certification workflows * Clear product ownership and accountability * No forced migrations or surprise sunsets * Transparent product roadmaps * Stable, knowledgeable support teams * AI agents An LMS should support your long-term education strategy and not introduce uncertainty into it. LMS alternatives for associations impacted by Momentive changes. If you're exploring alternatives, focus on platforms purpose-built for associations rather than general enterprise learning tools. OasisLMS. OasisLMS is designed specifically for associations and professional organizations, with native support for: * Continuing education and credit tracking * Certification and credentialing workflows * Monetization and eCommerce * Member and non-member audiences * Long-term roadmap stability without forced migrations * AI Agents For associations seeking clarity and control, OasisLMS offers a fundamentally different model from portfolio-owned platforms. Cornerstone. Cornerstone provides robust analytics and scalability, but it is not association-native. CE, certification, and monetization workflows often require customization. Absorb LMS. Absorb LMS delivers a strong learner experience, though associations may need additional configuration to support complex CE or credentialing requirements. Final thoughts: understanding the "Momentive LMS" Confusion. There is no single product called Momentive LMS, but there is a growing group of associations affected by Momentive's ownership decisions. If you're navigating a forced migration, sunset announcement, or unclear roadmap, the most important step is regaining control of your education strategy. That starts with choosing a platform built for associations and not shaped by portfolio consolidation. Sam Hirsch is the Vice President of sales and marketing at 360 Factor. He has helped over 250 associations find the right LMS for their organization.
