Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in business, marketing, education, or a related field is required.
  • Seven to ten or more years of progressive sales experience in business-to-business, higher education, publishing, software as a service, or enterprise-level account management roles is required.
  • Three to five or more years of direct sales leadership experience managing quota-carrying Account Executives or Strategic Account Directors with full revenue accountability is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder institutional sales cycles, including executive-level customer engagement.
  • Experience with pricing strategy, discount governance, negotiation frameworks, and contract execution is required.

Responsibilities
  • Own regional revenue performance and overall account strategy, ensuring growth, retention, and execution of strategic priorities across the assigned territory.
  • Translate the Vice President of Strategic Accounts' vision into regional operating plans with clear goals, expectations, and processes for consistent execution.
  • Drive forecast accuracy and pipeline rigor through regular inspection, operating cadence, and data-validated forecasting.
  • Lead the development and execution of strategic account plans using analytics, market trends, and program performance to prioritize department-, cohort-, and institution-level opportunities.
  • Guide complex deal strategy, align cross-functional resources, and assist in high-value negotiations to accelerate growth.
  • Coach Strategic Account Directors on negotiation excellence and commercial rigor, including pricing strategy, discount and approval guardrails, executive-level contracting, and close-plan quality.
  • Advance Inclusive Access, Equitable Access, and Cengage Unlimited execution and data fluency covering enrollment, usage, pricing, adoption, and renewals.
  • Cultivate channel and bookstore partnerships for Inclusive Access, Equitable Access, and Cengage Unlimited accounts, ensuring alignment on pricing, process, implementation, and program performance.
  • Build partnerships with Solutions Sales, Solutions Engineering, and Customer Success leadership to ensure cohesive pre-sale strategy and post-sale execution.
  • Ensure the team understands and accomplishes the vision, priorities, and operating standards set by the Vice President of Accounts.
  • Develop and empower a high-performing, inclusive team through regular coaching, clear expectations, proactive skill development, and trust-based team dynamics.
  • Foster accountability by setting standards for forecast accuracy, customer relationship management rigor, operational excellence, and consistent follow-through.
  • Model customer-centric consultative engagement and elevate institutional relationships through data-driven, value-based conversations.
  • Drive continuous improvement in sales processes, workflows, and the Institutional Sales motion.
  • Reinforce standards for account planning, sales methodology, commercial guardrails, and institutional engagement across the region.
  • Provide transparent updates on performance, risks, opportunities, and market signals to the team and Vice President of Accounts.

Cengage has announced new AI capabilities across its higher education learning platforms, including Student Assistant, Instructor Assistant, and enhanced features within MindTap. The integrated tools aim to develop critical thinking and communication skills alongside AI literacy. Student Assistant provides contextual coaching based on Cengage content rather than generating answers. Students who struggle early in courses and use the tool are 90% more likely to continue submitting assignments through the term. Instructor Assistant gives faculty insights into student difficulties, enabling earlier intervention. MindTap offers AI-enabled scenarios and video-based assignments for real-world skills practice. This autumn, Student Assistant and Instructor Assistant will be available across more than 800 higher education products.
