Responsibilities
  • Own, driving, and communicating the UI/UX vision for Marathon based on creative and production priorities.
  • Own Marathon UI/UX quality, design craft excellence, and consistency while holding UI/UX teams accountable to achieving vision and goals.

Bungie needs new game greenlit after Destiny 2 shutdown and 400 layoffs, not just Marathon

Bungie faces an uncertain future following 400 layoffs, with its most crucial next step being approval of a new game project beyond Marathon, according to industry analysis. Whilst Marathon development continues, the studio currently has no other greenlit projects despite years of pitching new titles, including potential Destiny IP spin-offs. Bungie lays off 292 employees in Bellevue after Destiny 2 update falls short

Bungie, the Bellevue-based video game studio, has laid off 292 employees following disappointing performance of its "Destiny 2" update. The cuts primarily affected staff working on the Destiny series and a small number on the Marathon game. All impacted employees worked at Bungie's Bellevue location, with layoffs effective from 9 July. Most positions eliminated were video game engineers, producers and designers. This marks the company's third round of layoffs in three years. Bungie stated the workforce reduction was necessary to "best position the studio" for the future, acknowledging Destiny 2 fell short of expectations. Bungie plans layoffs as Destiny 2 ends, no immediate Destiny 3 in development

Bungie is not immediately developing Destiny 3 and is planning layoffs, according to Bloomberg. Sources told reporter Jason Schreier that the studio has no specific project greenlit for the Destiny 2 development team following today's announcement that the game will cease receiving live service content updates. The studio will instead invest more in Marathon, its extraction shooter that launched earlier this year but hasn't met sales expectations. Bungie plans to add a casual PvE mode to attract more players. Bungie has struggled with new projects recently. In 2024, the company laid off over 200 employees after cancelling Destiny spin-off Payback. Today's announcement stated Bungie will "begin work incubating" its next games, though any future Destiny title appears far off.

Marathon earns $50M against $200M+ budget despite positive reviews
