All the hidden Mexican folklore monsters everyone missed in Netflix's I Am Frankelda.

All the hidden Mexican folklore monsters everyone missed in Netflix's I Am Frankelda. Netflix's I Am Frankelda, released on June 12, 2026 from the Ambriz brothers, brings 19th-century Mexican writer Frankelda into her nightmare realm of Topus Terrentus, where subtle folklore creatures like El Coco and aluxes add rich cultural depth to this pioneering stop-motion tale. In the summer of 2026, Netflix quietly delivered one of the year's most distinctive animated offerings with I Am Frankelda. Directed and written by brothers Arturo and Roy Ambriz through their studio Cinema Fantasma, the film premiered on the platform on June 12, 2026. Mexico's first feature-length stop-motion production, it serves as a prequel to the creators' earlier series Frankelda's Book of Spooks (Los Sustos Ocultos de Frankelda). The story follows Francisca Imelda, a gifted but suppressed 19th-century Mexican writer, who is drawn into the decaying parallel kingdom of Topus Terrentus. This release taps into a growing appetite for culturally rooted fantasy. It embeds Mexican folklore into a high-concept narrative about creativity, identity, and the fragile bond between storytellers and their tales. The Ambriz brothers, mentored by Guillermo del Toro, spent years self-financing the project, resulting in over 200 handmade puppets and a richly textured world. The film's arrival feels timely. In an era when streaming platforms seek authentic voices beyond Hollywood formulas, I Am Frankelda stands out for its tactile craftsmanship and thoughtful integration of heritage. What is Netflix's I Am Frankelda all about. At its core, I Am Frankelda explores the origin of the mysterious ghostwriter from the series. In 19th-century Mexico, young Francisca Imelda struggles against a society that dismisses her dark fiction, particularly as a woman. Her imaginative horrors gain literal life when she enters Topus Terrentus, a realm inhabited by "spooks" - supernatural entities sustained by human fear. Prince Herneval, an owl-like tormented royal, pulls her in to help restore balance. The kingdom's storyteller, Procustes- a grotesque spider-like figure, schemes to plagiarise her work for power. As Francisca embraces her voice as Frankelda, she confronts not only external threats but the personal cost of creation. The narrative weaves personal agency with broader themes of cultural memory and the power of stories to sustain or endanger worlds. The Ambriz brothers crafted a musical dark fantasy that blends Renaissance-inspired aesthetics with gothic horror. Over 100 minutes, it shifts between the historical human world and the vibrant, decaying nightmare realm, using stop-motion's physicality to make every puppet and set feel alive. This prequel deepens the lore of the series, where Frankelda and her enchanted book Herneval narrate tales of children facing spooks. The result is a story about reclamation. Suppressed creativity finds its fullest expression in a place built from fears. For viewers familiar with the series, it provides satisfying context; for newcomers, it stands alone as a visually stunning entry into Mexican animation. All the hidden Mexican folklore monsters in Netflix's I Am Frankelda explored. The Ambriz brothers have not transplanted folklore creatures wholesale but woven their essence into Topus Terrentus's society. This subtle approach rewards attentive viewing and reflects a sophisticated understanding of how myths evolve. 1. Don Coco (El Coco / El Cucuy): The classic Hispanic bogeyman, known for stealing or punishing children, appears as a monstrous figure echoing the historical dictator Porfirio Díaz. This design ties personal childhood fears to political authority, grounding the fantasy in Mexico's 19th-century context. In the broader Frankelda universe, variants like Coco Jr. appear in the series. 2. Chupasagre: Drawing from bloodsucking entities in Mexican and Latin American lore, this figure adds to the ecosystem of spooks that feed on human dread. It enriches the predatory undercurrents of the nightmare realm without dominating the narrative. 3. Aluxes: Tiny guardian sprites from Mayan mythology find echoes in the cosmology of Topus Terrentus. Their presence connects the story to pre-Columbian traditions, blending with the ceiba tree's mystique, a sacred element in Mesoamerican cultures symbolising life and the underworld. 4. Xochimilco Axolotl Mermaid: This creature incorporates Mexico City's iconic amphibian, endemic to the region's ancient lake system. Transforming the regenerative axolotl into an aquatic horror element highlights local biodiversity within the fantasy. 5. Chamán Coyote: Viewers have noted this striking, eerie design among the menagerie. Coyote figures carry shamanic and trickster connotations in various indigenous traditions, adding layers of cunning and spiritual guidance to the spooks' clans. Beyond these, the film populates Topus Terrentus with bird-like and arachnid clans, seven feuding clan leaders, and a host of Renaissance-inspired beasts. Procustes himself, with multiple mouths, limbs, and a commanding presence, embodies authoritarian storytelling gone awry. The realm's architecture and society complete with cuisine, fragrances, and politics, create a "high culture" of monsters that feels lived-in rather than monstrous for shock value. These elements are not Easter eggs for their own sake. They illustrate how folklore monsters process societal anxieties from authority (El Coco) to the unknown (aluxes and ceiba). In Topus Terrentus, as belief fades, so does the spooks' vitality, mirroring real-world concerns about cultural preservation. The craftsmanship amplifies their impact. Handmade puppets and intricate sets make each encounter tactile and memorable. Sequences overflowing with the menagerie underscore the kingdom's vibrancy and fragility, inviting rewatches to spot additional details. The craft and cultural resonance of these elements in the show. The Ambriz brothers' decade-long effort, including mortgaging family homes, shines through in every frame. Mentorship from Guillermo del Toro provided guidance, yet the vision remains distinctly Mexican. Influences range from Gustave Doré's engravings to surrealists and local surroundings, creating a baroque yet refined nightmare world. This approach matters because it expands representation in animation. Stop-motion, labour-intensive and often dominated by Western studios, gains a vital new voice. Audiences respond to the authenticity and not just in folklore but in the portrayal of a female creator claiming space. For fans of dark fantasy or anthology horror, the film connects to broader traditions while carving its niche. Its musical elements and emotional core elevate it beyond visual novelty. In the end, I Am Frankelda succeeds by treating its monsters as more than scares. They embody cultural memory, creative struggle and the enduring power of stories. I Am Frankelda streams worldwide on Netflix (availability may vary by region; check your local library). Explore the original series Frankelda's Book of Spooks on Max. An avid reader and dedicated film enthusiast, she has always been drawn to the power of storytelling. Whether through literature or cinema, stories have shaped the way she understa...

NZ On Air and Netflix partner on crew training program.

NZ On Air and Netflix partner on crew training program. · June 11, 2026 (Image: iStock) NZ On Air and Netflix will jointly fund a screen workforce development program aimed at producing industry-ready crew, after research found the training system in NZ has been "fundamentally misaligned with the way the screen sector operates". The one-year program, Kahurangi Toi Ātea, looks to address documented gap between training pathways and employment. In the upcoming financial year, up to 45 participants will complete intensive classroom training across five professional strands. Up to 12 people will then take part in paid on-set placements, totalling 160 hours, on two New Zealand series productions, mentored by heads of department. They will then earn the "New Zealand Certificate in Screen Skills". Last year, a study commissioned by Toi Mai Workforce Development Council that found that 80 per cent of people working in New Zealand's creative industries hold no creative qualifications, while 86 per cent of people who do hold creative qualifications are not working in creative roles. The training system was observed to produce graduates who are credentialled but not industry-ready. Recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Kahurangi Toi Ātea was created by Share The Knowledge and co-developed with Toi Mai Workforce Development Council and Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu. A successful pilot was run in late 2024 with participants gaining on-set experience on Nat Boltt's feature film Holy Days. NZ On Air head of funding Amie Mills says there has been a documented crew shortage in NZ for some time, and the agency has a role to play in uplifting capability. "There is no substitute for learning your craft on a real production alongside senior practitioners who've built their careers doing this mahi. Kahurangi Toi Ātea gives that experience formal structure, an NZQA credential, and a clearer pathway into the industry. We hope to see production companies building their crew pipelines through it, and education providers connecting into it. The talent is here. We want to see this programme taken up by the whole sector, and to grow with it," she says. Netflix APAC studio policy and production affairs director Debra Richards adds: "Behind every great film or series is a talented crew bringing stories to life. We're proud to partner with NZ On Air on Kahurangi Toi Ātea to help create more pathways into the screen industry and ensure emerging practitioners can develop their skills in real production environments. Investing in local talent is essential to the long-term success of New Zealand's screen sector, and we hope this programme helps equip the next generation of crew with the experience, confidence and connections they need to build lasting careers." Applications for the 2026-27 classroom cohort will open soon to all interested applicants. The initiative will be reviewed in 2027, with the goal of establishing a repeatable national model that production companies, broadcasters, and education providers can deploy across future film and series projects.

Netflix live Action 'Solo Leveling' series: filming underway & what we know so far.

Netflix live Action 'Solo Leveling' series: filming underway & what we know so far. Filming is underway on Netflix's live-action adaptation of Solo Leveling. Netflix has another huge live-action adaptation of a beloved webtoon in development, as it was announced that the streaming service is adapting the worldwide phenomenon Solo Leveling. Byeon W00-seok has been confirmed to play the series lead as Sung Jin-woo, and is joined by Han So Hee and Kang You Seok. Filming will reportedly get underway in April 2026. Solo Leveling is an upcoming South Korean Netflix Original fantasy-action series and the adaptation of the popular web novel of the same name by author Chugong. The web novel has already been adapted, as its webtoon was serialized by KakaoPage in March 2018, and illustrated by Jang Sung-rak. While the webtoon was extremely popular in its own right, what propelled the franchise into the stratosphere was the anime adaptation. The influence of the anime adaptation has been so ginormous that the webtoon has since amassed an impressive 14.3 billion cumulative views worldwide. However, what is more remarkable is that Sony recently announced the anime as the "most watched anime in the history of Crunchyroll." Taking into consideration that the likes of One Piece, Naruto, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer are all available on Crunchyroll, that is an awe-inspiring feat. It even swept the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, winning nine of the major categories, including Anime of the Year, Best Action, and Best Character. Photo Credit: Solo Leveling producers Sota Furuhashi (Aniplex), Atsushi Kaneko (A-1 Pictures), and Kanako Takahashi (Crunchyroll), along with English voice cast Aleks Le (voice of Sung Jinwoo) and Michelle Rojas (voice of Cha Hae-in) at the Television Academy's Wolf Theatre in North Hollywood - Saint / Crunchyroll Solo Leveling is beloved, and like every live-action adaptation of a beloved manga, webtoon, or anime, it is often met with scrutiny. To help ease the nerves of fans reading this, Netflix has an excellent track record with its webtoon adaptations. Let's not forget that Netflix has arguably two of the best live-action adaptations of beloved manga/anime out there, in Alice in Borderland and One Piece. What is the plot of Solo Leveling? Decades prior, strange portals began opening across the world, housing monsters who could unleash devastating harm to humanity. The arrival of the portals also saw the awakening of supernatural abilities in humans, granting them great strength and power to protect the rest of society and enabling them to hunt the deadly monsters. Many years later, Sung Jin-woo, an E-Level rank hunter and one of the weakest hunters in Korea, puts his life on the line every time he enters a dungeon, regardless of how weak the monsters are within. After barely surviving a monstrously powerful double dungeon, Jin-woo is chosen by 'the System' and given a power unique only to him, allowing Jin-woo to level up his strength and magic by completing quests and battling more dangerous dungeons. Who are the cast members of Solo Leveling? Byeon Woo Seok, was the first cast member announced and will play the lead role of Sung Jin-woo. The actor has starred in several Netflix projects, including 20th Century Girl, Record of Youth, Lovely Runner, and Strong Girl Namsoon. Outside of Netflix, he has led K-dramas such as Moonshine, Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency, and the film Soulmate. It was reported by Naver that Han So Hee has joined the cast of Solo Leveling. While the name of her role hasn't been announced, she is expected to be playing the role of Cha Hae In, Korea's only female S-Rank Hunter. Netflix subscribers will be familiar with her work, thanks to her starring roles in fantastic projects such as My Name and Gyeongseong Creature. It has been recently reported that Kang You Seok has been offered the role of Yoo Jin Ho, a D-Rank Hunter, who befriends Jin-Woo. Kang You Seok has starred in Netflix projects such as Resident Playbook, When Life Gives You Tangerines, Start Up, and Mystic Pop-Up Bar. Kang Mi Na has been cast in Solo Leveling, but the name of her role has yet to be revealed. However, online fans have already speculated that she will play Sung Jin Ah, the younger sister of Sung Jin Woo. The actress recently starred in Netflix's horror thriller If Wishes Could Kill, and played a lead role in the popular Netflix film Love Untangled. Also reported to be cast in Solo Leveling is Cha Woo Min, who will reportedly play the role of Baruka, the leader of the Ice elves. The actor also starred in Love Untangled and will play a supporting role in Netflix's upcoming K-drama Take Charge of My Heart. There are several key characters that fans will look forward to seeing cast, such as: * Sung Jin-ah - Jin-Woo's younger sister. * Yoo Jin-ho - D-Rank Hunter who befriends Jin-Woo. * Cha Hae-in - Korea's only female S-Rank Hunter. * Go Gun-hee - Chairman of the Korean Hunters Association. * Baek Yoon-ho - S-Rank Hunter and Guild Master of the White Tiger Guild. * Choi Jong-in - S-Rank Hunter and Guild Master of the Hunters Guild. * Woo Jin-chul - A-Rank Hunter and Chief Inspector of the Korean Hunters' Association's Surveillance Team.
