AECOM-led JV bags Design Consultancy contract for Chennai Metro Phase 1 Capacity Enhancement.

AECOM-led JV bags Design Consultancy contract for Chennai Metro Phase 1 Capacity Enhancement. MRT Online Desk Posted on: 2026-07-15 16:57:00 Viewer: 82 Comments: 0 Country: India City: Chennai Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) and Detailed Design Consultancy contract for the Phase-1 Network Capacity Enhancement Project to the joint venture of AECOM India Private Limited and Nippon Koei India Private Limited. The contract, valued at ₹35.97 crore (inclusive of GST), marks a significant step towards increasing the carrying capacity and operational efficiency of Chennai's existing metro network. Urban Transit The consultancy assignment will focus on upgrading the operational performance of the operational Phase-1 network through enhanced signalling systems, increased train frequency and infrastructure improvements rather than constructing new metro corridors. The project is expected to be implemented over a period of approximately four years. Global competition for a strategic metro consultancy. The tender attracted strong international participation, with six technically qualified joint ventures and consortia from India, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Italy competing for the prestigious assignment. The diversity of bidders highlights the growing global interest in India's expanding metro rail sector and the importance of collaboration between domestic engineering firms and international metro specialists. The winning consortium of AECOM India and Nippon Koei India submitted the lowest evaluated consultancy fee of ₹30.48 crore (exclusive of applicable taxes) and was declared the Most Advantageous Bidder under CMRL's tender evaluation criteria. After including GST and other applicable taxes, the contract value stands at ₹35.97 crore. Other prominent bidders included the joint venture of Balaji Railroad Systems and Korea National Railway, AYESA with Ayesa India, SYSTRA-SYSTRA MVA India-Ardanuy Ingeniería, Aarvee Engineering with ARX Group SA, and a consortium comprising Consulting Engineers Group, RITES Limited and Italy's RINA Consulting. Capacity Enhancement instead of network expansion. Unlike conventional metro projects that focus on constructing new corridors, the Chennai Metro Phase-1 Capacity Enhancement Project is aimed at maximising the performance of the existing network. The consultancy will develop engineering solutions to increase train frequency, improve signalling systems and optimise operational throughput, enabling the metro system to accommodate growing passenger demand without requiring additional track infrastructure. As Chennai continues to witness rising metro ridership, capacity enhancement has become a strategic priority for CMRL to ensure reliable, safe and efficient services while preparing the network for future expansion under subsequent metro phases. "Enhancing the capacity of existing metro networks is one of the most cost-effective strategies for meeting growing urban mobility demands. Modern signalling technologies, operational optimisation and advanced engineering solutions can significantly increase passenger throughput while improving service reliability and safety. The strong international participation in this consultancy reflects India's emergence as a key destination for world-class urban rail infrastructure and technical expertise," said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. International collaboration driving metro excellence. A notable feature of the bidding process was the widespread use of international joint ventures, with every participating bidder combining Indian expertise with specialised global metro consultants or railway organisations. Such partnerships bring together local knowledge of Indian regulatory and construction practices with international experience in metro planning, systems engineering and project management. Rail Freight The participation of organisations such as Korea National Railway, Nippon Koei, SYSTRA, RINA Consulting and RITES demonstrates the increasing collaboration between Indian and global engineering firms in delivering complex urban transit projects. Supporting Chennai's growing metro network. Discover more Job Listings Traffic & Route Planners The consultancy award forms part of CMRL's broader strategy to strengthen Chennai's metro infrastructure in line with increasing ridership and the ongoing expansion of the city's rapid transit network. By improving operational efficiency and increasing train carrying capacity, the Phase-1 enhancement programme is expected to deliver shorter waiting times, better passenger experience and improved service reliability across the existing metro system. The project also reinforces Chennai Metro's commitment to adopting advanced technologies and international best practices to build a more resilient, efficient and future-ready urban transport network. As metro systems across India continue to mature, capacity enhancement initiatives such as this are becoming increasingly important for maximising the value of existing infrastructure while supporting sustainable urban mobility. Aeroberm releases vertiport market study as Hong Kong's low-altitude economy accelerates.

Aeroberm releases vertiport market study as Hong Kong's low-altitude economy accelerates. Aeroberm will release its Low Altitude Economy Vertiport Market Study for Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area at LEAP East 2026 in Hong Kong this week, as the region moves from pilot programmes towards the full commercial rollout of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The release comes as Hong Kong ramps up its "Regulatory Sandbox X" programme, with both EHang (partnering with Kwoon Chung Smart Mobility and Hong Kong Cyberport) and AutoFlight (partnering with AECOM and China Travel Service) being selected for the initiative's first batch of trial projects. Combined with mainland China's rapid low-altitude infrastructure build-out just across the border in Shenzhen, the momentum signals Hong Kong's emergence as a genuine air taxi hub within the Greater Bay Area, not simply an observer of it. Shenzhen has built 1,284 low-altitude take-off and landing sites, surpassing its 2026 target of 1,200 ahead of schedule, backed by 12 billion yuan (USD 1.7 billion) in government investment. But that infrastructure is overwhelmingly built for drones, logistics, and general aviation - Shenzhen does not yet have a network of dedicated, purpose-built passenger vertiports. This is precisely the gap Aeroberm's market study is designed to quantify: a forecast installed base of 500 to 1,000 modular passenger vertipads by 2030, rising to 1,500 to 2,000 by 2035 and 7,000 to 8,000 by 2045, as commercial passenger air taxi operations begin in earnest. Over the same period, the Shenzhen market is forecast to grow from today's early-stage activity to USD 1.5 to 2 billion by 2035 and USD 4 to 6 billion by 2045, supporting an estimated 54 million annual passenger trips. Nationally, China's air taxi market is projected to reach USD 40 to 60 billion by 2045. Clem Newton-Brown, founder and CEO of Skyportz and the creator of Aeroberm, said: "Shenzhen has built the world's most advanced low-altitude logistics network, but passenger vertiports are still an open question, not just here but everywhere. Hong Kong's entry into a sandbox alongside AutoFlight and EHang shows this region is moving faster than almost anywhere else in the world on both aircraft and airspace. What's still missing is standardised, safety-validated ground infrastructure purpose-built for passenger eVTOL. That's the gap Aeroberm exists to fill, and the Greater Bay Area is exactly where we want to build it." Skyportz is in active discussions with local infrastructure companies to collaborate on rolling out Aeroberm's modular vertipad network across China, positioning the company to move quickly as Hong Kong's sandbox trials progress and Shenzhen's build-out continues. Newton-Brown will be speaking at LEAP East and available to meet investors at Aeroberm's stand, H3 P137, throughout the event. With Aeroberm's full-scale prototype currently in fabrication ahead of global commercial launch, Aeroberm is seeking strategic partners and first-mover investors to help scale the technology across the Greater Bay Area and other frontier air taxi markets.

M5 Junction 26 scheme earns double industry success with national and international awards.

M5 Junction 26 scheme earns double industry success with national and international awards. A flagship highways project in Somerset has received two major industry accolades in the space of a week, with the M5 Junction 26 Chelston Link Project recognised for its innovation, collaboration and delivery excellence against competition from some of the world's largest infrastructure schemes. A major road improvement scheme in Somerset has been recognised on both the national and international stage after securing two prestigious industry awards for excellence in infrastructure delivery. The M5 Junction 26 Chelston Link Project, delivered by Somerset Council's Infrastructure Programmes Group (IPG) alongside delivery partners AECOM and Heidelberg Materials, claimed the Project Excellence and Innovation Award at the NEC Contracts Annual Awards 2026. The accolade recognises outstanding performance in project delivery, innovation and collaborative working, with the Somerset scheme selected ahead of a strong international field of finalists. Among the projects competing for the title were Hong Kong's £5 billion Trunk Road T4 programme, which finished in second place, and HMP Millsike, the UK's first all-electric prison development, which secured third. Judges praised projects that demonstrated excellence in partnership working, innovative thinking and successful delivery, highlighting those that create lasting value for communities while overcoming complex engineering and delivery challenges. The recognition came just 24 hours after Somerset Council's Infrastructure Programmes Group received further honours at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) Awards 2026, where the team was highly commended in the Team of the Year category. The award acknowledged the group's wider contribution to infrastructure delivery, recognising its leadership, collaborative culture and consistent performance across a growing portfolio of major transport projects. Since being established in 2015, Somerset Council's Infrastructure Programmes Group has overseen the delivery of more than £110 million of strategically important highway infrastructure across the county. During that period, the team has developed a reputation for delivering technically complex schemes through strong governance, close collaboration with industry partners and a focus on safety, efficiency and value for money. The M5 Junction 26 Chelston Link Project has become one of the programme's flagship schemes, showcasing how modern approaches to design, construction and partnership working can improve connectivity while supporting economic development and delivering environmental benefits. Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's Lead Member for Highways and Transport, described the double recognition as an outstanding achievement for everyone involved in the project. He said receiving honours at two major industry awards within the same week reflected the expertise, commitment and collaborative approach demonstrated by the council's Infrastructure Programmes Group and its delivery partners. Wilkins added that winning the NEC Contracts award against internationally recognised infrastructure schemes highlighted Somerset's ability to deliver projects that compete with some of the best examples of infrastructure delivery around the world. He also said the Chelston Link Project illustrates the benefits that can be achieved when local authorities and private sector partners work together with a shared commitment to innovation and delivering positive outcomes for local communities. The latest awards add to an already impressive list of accolades for the scheme. Earlier this year, the project was shortlisted for the Best Highways Decarbonisation Award at the Decarbonising Transport Awards 2026, recognising its contribution to reducing carbon emissions and embedding more sustainable construction practices. It also received commendation in the Innovation Award category at the CIHT South West Awards 2026, further underlining its reputation as an example of best practice in modern highways delivery. With recognition now spanning regional, national and international competitions, the M5 Junction 26 Chelston Link Project has established itself as one of the UK's most highly regarded recent highway infrastructure schemes, demonstrating how innovation, collaboration and sustainability can combine to deliver lasting benefits for both communities and the wider transport network.

AECOM has significantly strengthened its position within the UK public sector after securing appointments across nine categories of the Government Commercial Agency's Construction Professional Services 2 (CPS2) Framework, broadening its access to major infrastructure programmes over the next four years. The latest appointments represent a substantial expansion from the company's previous position on the framework, where it was selected for five lots in 2021. The renewed agreement provides opportunities to support projects spanning transport, energy, defence, flood resilience, housing, healthcare and education across the UK and internationally. Public sector framework opens access to major infrastructure programmes With an overall value of US$4.7 billion, CPS2 is one of the largest consultancy procurement frameworks established for the UK public sector and serves as a primary route through which government organisations procure technical advisory, engineering, design and project management services. The framework enables central government departments and public bodies to commission support for individual projects, long-term capital investment programmes and overseas developments undertaken on behalf of UK government organisations. Managed by the Government Commercial Agency (GCA), the agreement is intended to improve value for money, reduce procurement risk and provide public sector organisations with streamlined access to specialist expertise across the built environment. Wider scope reflects growing multidisciplinary capability AECOM's expanded appointment gives the company access to a broader range of specialist work than under the previous framework. Its nine successful lots cover general infrastructure, project management, defence, defence enhanced, international services, nuclear energy and three separate flood risk and asset management categories. Together, these appointments allow the company to provide engineering, planning, advisory and programme management services across every stage of the project lifecycle, from early feasibility studies through to construction delivery and long-term asset management. The international category also enables AECOM to support overseas projects for organisations including the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, while the defence-related lots include work requiring enhanced security-cleared capabilities. Long-term partnership with government continues The appointment marks AECOM's second consecutive term on the CPS framework, reinforcing its long-standing relationship with government clients as investment continues across critical national infrastructure. Commenting on the announcement, Lara Poloni, AECOM's President, said "As one of the largest procurement frameworks in the history of UK public sector consultancy, the scope and scale of CPS2 provides an important route to market for our multidisciplinary offerings in key sectors including energy, defence, social infrastructure, transportation and environment." Richard Whitehead, Chief Executive of AECOM's Europe & India region, added "Our appointment to CPS2 deepens our relationship as a trusted partner with organisations across the UK public sector, including central government departments, local authorities and the Environment Agency." Richard said the framework provides an opportunity for the company to continue helping public sector organisations address major infrastructure and built environment challenges over the coming years.
