Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related degree with control automation coursework is required.
  • Coursework, laboratory work, or projects must cover areas such as control system theory, supervisory software development, high-level programming such as C++, object-oriented programming, database design and management, software engineering, robotics, mechatronics, AC/DC drives and motors, or electrical power systems.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills are required.
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships in educational or employment settings are required.
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships with clients, suppliers, and internal and external contacts are required.
  • Demonstrated personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement in areas of responsibility is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide software design technical support for control solutions and drafting and hardware design technical support for electrical distribution and control solutions for energy and infrastructure projects.
  • Gather pertinent information from authorized sources to assess project requirements for the assigned scope of work.
  • Create and document industrial controller and computer-based software modules to meet control functionality and project work-progress targets.
  • Create and animate Human Machine Interface software to meet control functionality and project work-progress targets.
  • Conduct simulations to verify that industrial controller, computer-based, and Human Machine Interface software modules satisfy design and project requirements.
  • Recommend improvements to test procedures and provide input on software and hardware engineering standards.
  • Control document revision, distribution, and archiving using established project document-control procedures.
  • Create electrical drawings for circuits, AC and DC drives, power distribution, programmable logic controllers, associated input/output, and other control equipment using approved computer-aided design software.
  • Create control-power distribution, relay, network, and sensor-interface drawings using approved computer-aided design software.
  • Produce mechanical panel-layout drawings from bills of material and wiring diagrams in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Develop enclosure-outline mechanical drawings, spare-parts lists, and other project documentation.
  • Edit project drawings for preliminary, manufacturing, as-shipped, and final as-installed configurations.
  • Update project drawings to support site commissioning activities.
  • Create and maintain standard drawing templates for circuits and projects.
  • Issue requisitions through the enterprise resource planning system to ensure parts are ordered on time.
  • Identify and define interfaces between software modules and functions.
  • Write software modules and collaborate with the project team to integrate them into the overall project.
  • Recommend feasible hardware and software improvements to the engineering manager.
  • Develop algorithms and transfer functions defining the electromechanical operation of industrial machinery, primarily metal rolling mills.
  • Verify algorithms and transfer functions through computer simulation of mechanical processes and analysis of empirical operating-machinery data.
  • Use verified mathematical algorithms and transfer functions to design and implement software that generates control-system setup and operating parameters.
  • Provide regular, accurate status reports to appropriate parties.
  • Comply with company policies, procedures, regulations, and laws and ensure effective use of business tools and processes.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with control automation coursework is preferred.
  • Enrollment in a Master of Science program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with control automation, physics, or materials science coursework is preferred.
  • A research project or thesis in control system theory, software engineering, robotics, mechatronics, AC/DC motor drives, or electrical power systems is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of programmable logic controller programming and Human Machine Interface programming languages is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft development tools including Visual Studio, VC++, Visual Basic, SQL Server, .NET, AutoCAD, Visio, or an equivalent drawing tool is preferred.
  • Work experience as a research assistant, intern, or co-op in the listed areas is preferred.
