Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of relevant experience are required.
  • Two years of experience providing arthropod outreach programming or interpretation and working with live arthropods, including insects, spiders, and other invertebrates.
  • Two years of experience developing, coordinating, and delivering outreach activities.
  • Experience with scheduling and logistics and strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse clientele and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite applications, including Teams and Outlook.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to deliver outreach programs on nights and weekends.
  • A valid driver's license and experience driving a large vehicle and hauling a trailer within city limits and on highways.
Responsibilities
  • Provide entomology-based outreach programs and activities for diverse audiences.
  • Deliver youth programs aligned with Ohio state science education standards, interpretive programs for the public, and outreach services for partners and stakeholders.
  • Use live arthropods from the Ohio State Insectary in small-scale outreach programs and mobile BUGmobile events.
  • Engage entomology students in outreach activities and support recruiting and training students, interns, and volunteer Insect Ambassadors.
  • Develop or coordinate workshops, seminars, and webinars with Entomology faculty and Extension personnel.
  • Serve as the primary operational point of contact for Columbus-based outreach programs.
  • Coordinate the end-to-end logistical lifecycle of outreach programs, including schedules, timelines, staff and volunteer shift rosters, and on-site setup and teardown.
  • Oversee BUGmobile operations and maintenance while ensuring compliance with safety protocols and policies.
  • Assist with creating digital outreach content for the department's communications.
  • Find and apply for applicable funds to support programming.
  • Provide regular feedback to the Department of Entomology Manager of Community Outreach for continuous program improvement.
  • Ensure sufficient data is gathered to document outreach impact for annual reporting and planning.
  • Field entomology-related public inquiries and respond to questions from the public and stakeholders.
  • Work with the Ohio State Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic to confirm and disseminate arthropod diagnostic information.
  • Follow established standard operating procedures to ensure proper care of animals used in outreach activities.
