IonQ sells quantum computing through cloud access and on-site systems that use trapped-ion qubits. Its processors, such as Forte and Tempo, are accessed by customers via cloud platforms or deployed on customer sites, and the company is expanding into quantum networking, quantum key distribution, and sensing through acquisitions and a SkyWater Technology deal. It differentiates itself with trapped-ion technology and by building a broader quantum ecosystem through strategic acquisitions and partnerships to connect devices and services beyond hardware alone. Its goal is to scale commercial quantum computing, grow revenue, and strengthen its cash position to support ongoing expansion and ecosystem development.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Q2 2026 revenue reached $80.1 million, up 287%, and guidance rose to $290 million.
  • DARPA’s August 2026 clock contract extends IonQ into repeatable government hardware sales.
  • August 25, 2026 board additions from Oracle and SkyWater strengthen financing and manufacturing execution.

What critics are saying

  • Integration of SkyWater and IonQ delays combined guidance until late 2026.
  • IonQ’s Q2 2026 GAAP net loss hit $1.87 billion from warrant valuation.
  • Quantum commercialization remains unproven; if 2027 scaling slips, the full-stack thesis breaks.

What makes IonQ unique

  • IonQ’s trapped-ion systems deliver all-to-all qubit connectivity without routing overhead.
  • IonQ now owns SkyWater, pairing quantum design with U.S.-based chip manufacturing.
  • IonQ spans computing, networking, sensing, and security through acquisitions since 2025.

IonQ stock unlikely to surge in 12 months despite 287% revenue jump and $1.8B SkyWater acquisition

IonQ shares are trading near $39, valuing the quantum computing company at roughly $15 billion. The stock has traded as high as $84 over the past 12 months. The company reported $80.1 million in revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 287% year-over-year. IonQ recently acquired chip foundry SkyWater for $1.8 billion in cash and stock. SkyWater generated $317.1 million in revenue through the first half of 2026. Management is guiding for full-year revenue of $280 million to $290 million. Combined with SkyWater's projected $600 million, IonQ could reach approximately $900 million in total revenue this year. However, IonQ reported a $254.7 million operating loss through six months of 2026. The company's share count is increasing significantly, with approximately 24 million new shares added from the SkyWater acquisition and $450 million in stock-based compensation over the past year.

Quantum computing stocks poised to fall hardest if September triggers AI sell-off

IonQ reported second-quarter revenue of $80.1 million, up 287% year-over-year, and raised its full-year guidance to $280 million-$290 million from $260 million-$270 million. The company's remaining performance obligations grew 297% to $485 million. Quantum computing stocks have declined more sharply than the broader tech sector during sell-offs in 2025, falling harder than the Nasdaq-100 on 17 of 23 trading days when tech dropped at least 1.5%. The sector faces valuation concerns, with IonQ trading at significantly higher multiples than comparable unprofitable software companies like C3.ai and BigBear.ai, which trade at 6.9 times and 10.1 times forward sales respectively. September historically sees average market declines of 1.16%, though upcoming events including the jobs report and Federal Reserve meeting could increase volatility.

QC Ware and IonQ achieve chemical accuracy in drug discovery with hybrid quantum workflow

QC Ware has demonstrated a hybrid quantum-classical chemistry workflow using its Promethium platform and IonQ's Forte quantum computer via Amazon Braket. The test modelled the heme active site of cytochrome P450nor, an enzyme in the superfamily responsible for most human drug metabolism. The workflow calculated electrostatic interaction energy within 0.5 kcal/mol of classical benchmarks, meeting the 1 kcal/mol threshold for chemical accuracy. This represents more than double the accuracy of standard classical methods. Promethium preprocessed a 115-atom model containing over 1,000 molecular orbitals, isolating it to a 4-orbital active space mapped onto 8 qubits for measurement. IonQ Forte's all-to-all qubit connectivity enabled complex entangling gates without routing overhead. The demonstration shows how more accurate binding energy predictions at metal centres could help pharmaceutical researchers better rank drug candidates and identify metabolic risks earlier in development.

IonQ's Skyloom deploys 84 optical communication terminals on orbit for US Space Development Agency

Skyloom Global, an IonQ company, has successfully deployed additional optical communication terminals (OCTs) on orbit, bringing the total to 84 installations. The OCTs were launched on 16 July 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The terminals are aboard York Space Systems satellites supporting the Space Development Agency's Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. This follows the initial Tranche 1 mission deployment in September 2025. IonQ's President of Quantum Platform, Jordan Shapiro, said the milestone reflects years of industrialisation and commitment to strengthening space-based communications infrastructure. The OCTs provide the backbone for resilient, data-rich mesh networks designed to deliver high-throughput, low-latency communications for national defence.
