Job Description Summary

Job would entail trimming of lymph node samples from white tailed deer to test for chronic wasting disease (CWD) for both ELISA and immunohistochemistry (IHC) processing. Student will need to be detailed oriented and maintain accurate and complete records for sample traceability. Both ELISA and IHC are approved assays through the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and are part of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s surveillance and management plans for CWD. There is the possibility for the student to continue work with ongoing wildlife research projects after the CWD testing season is complete or year-round assistance with trimming of samples for IHC.

Prior to December 1st : Would need weekday time (M-F 8a-4p) for one training course prior to the start of the busy hunting season (Dec 1-Dec 31). Approximately 2-4 hours total for training. Additional time acceptable per student’s schedule once training is complete, including weekends.

After December 1st : Students are allowed to work 4-6 hours/day with availability on weeknights, Saturdays and/or Sunday as student’s schedule allows, maximum of 16 hrs. per week. We are extremely flexible and willing to work with what a student has available based on their schedule. Expected needs through early- mid-January. This would include the weekends after Christmas and New Year’s and the possibility for hours during the break. Time during break would be flexible, including the weekend work.

Job Description

Preference will be given to a Veterinary Student with an interest in wildlife health.  Will consider other Veterinary Students or Graduate students with an interest in wildlife.  This position REQUIRES completed rabies vaccination series with a titer taken in last 2 years (if vaccinated more than 2 years prior)

Duties:

• Trimming cervid retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RPLNs) for chronic wasting disease (CWD) diagnostics

• Processing RPLNs for CWD diagnostics

• Record keeping and data tracking associated with testing

• Perform additional duties as assigned
