Requirements
  • The position is not a remote work position and requires Acute Care Certification for inpatient work.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Valid State of Florida Acute Care Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license.
  • Valid State of Florida Physician Assistant license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in Gastroenterology or Hepatology Practice.
  • Previous training or experience in acute care settings with Gastroenterology and/or Hepatology practice as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant).
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state and federal health regulations.
  • CITI Certification for Clinical Research Study participation.
  • Previous experience with EPIC EHR software or demonstrated ability to manage patients in an electronic medical record.
  • One year of experience seeing Gastroenterology patients in an outpatient setting is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Assess the physical and psychosocial status of patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • See GI and/or Hepatology patients in outpatient clinics through interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  • Possibly rotate inpatient on the University of Miami Hospital Hepatology inpatient service Monday through Friday for the right candidate.
  • For outpatient ambulatory work, cover 7–8 half days in ambulatory clinics and at UHealth locations, including ambulatory practices at UH Health Towers, UMHC Crohn’s and Colitis Center, Kendall, Lennar, Doral, Sole Mia, Boca, Plantation, Deerfield sites.
  • Round on Hepatology Inpatient Service at University of Miami Hospital no later than 8 a.m. and provide proper sign-out of patients with fellows at day’s end and prior to weekends.
  • Recognize deviations from normal in physical assessment and collaborate with a physician to formulate treatment plans.
  • Write prescriptions for medications, blood products, laboratory tests, and other therapeutic measures based on laboratory results and protocols.
  • Independently follow patients in outpatient settings and manage care concurrently.
  • Initiate and facilitate clinical research protocols and coordinate patient care with research staff.
  • Obtain complete medical histories independent of supervision by physicians.
  • See patients in follow-up between infusions and after procedures as necessary.
  • Initiate and maintain infusion orders for non-chemotherapy infusions as per protocol.
  • Order appropriate procedures and laboratory tests according to practice guidelines.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care appropriate for the patient and family.
  • Actively participate in quality assurance programs and peer review activities.
  • Provide medical support to physicians, triage, and implement care in a knowledgeable and skilled manner as evidenced by team feedback and documentation.
  • Conduct nursing assessments including examinations, injections, and health status evaluations.
  • Assess severity of patients’ condition and direct patients to appropriate medical providers.
  • Provide peer-to-peer reviews with insurance carriers in support of patients’ medications.
  • Consent patients for GI procedures and place orders for procedures and preps.
  • Maintain electronic medical record inbox and close encounters in a timely fashion according to University of Miami Medical Group guidelines.
  • Respond to patient inquiries and coordinate with back-office nurses, medical assistants, and secretaries to communicate results.
  • Provide inbasket message coverage for providers who depart the practice or are on Family Medical Leave Act leave.
  • Close inbasket messages within seven days and close encounters within three days of visits.
  • Must have annual influenza vaccine unless exempt for medical or religious reasons.
