Whitbread markets City office after abandoning Premier Inn hotel plan.

Whitbread markets City office after abandoning Premier Inn hotel plan. Premier Inn-owner Whitbread has appointed JLL to sell New London House in the City, almost three years after acquiring the building, following a review of the economics of developing the site into a hotel. The hospitality group had previously planned to convert the 89,722 sq ft office building at 6 London Street into a mixed-use development led by a 422-key hotel. A planning application for the scheme was approved by the City in July. Whitbread acquired the building from Orchard Street Investment Management for £56.5m in September 2023. Details of the current price tag have not been revealed. "Following a detailed review of the economics of developing the site into a budget hotel, we have decided to market New London House for sale and recycle capital into other growth opportunities across the business," a spokesperson for the group said. Whitbread added that it remained confident in the "long-term potential" of the site as a hotel development and would continue to seek opportunities to expand its Premier Inn and hub by Premier Inn brands across central London. Earlier this year Whitbread announced a cost-saving plan including closing all its remaining branded restaurants and selling a chunk of its freehold estate. The group has since come under pressure from activist investor Corvex Management to put itself up for sale. Corvex has been the leading voice calling for a strategic review of the business after reforms unveiled at the Autumn Budget added an extra £50m a year to its business rates liability.
