Requirements
  • Greater than 5 years’ experience as a physician leader, division chief or other leadership position.
  • Licensure or eligible for licensure as a physician in the state of Massachusetts.
  • Board Certified at least in one cardiovascular disease specialty.
  • Eligible for an academic appointment at the Professor level.
Responsibilities
  • Accountable for developing and implementing the cardiovascular network strategy, growth, financial profitability, and system integration across the Tufts Medicine enterprise; in alignment with Tufts Medicine priorities, executive leadership, VP for the CVSL and the steering committee of the CVSL.
  • Works collaboratively with CVSL physician leaders, VP of CVSL, Directors, and administrative managers to monitor and improve utilization and cost efficiency.
  • Lead in partnership with the VP of CVSL to develop and be accountable for annual budget performance to plan.
  • Develops and implements appropriate benchmarked compensation and productivity plans for all CVSL physicians.
  • Recommends changes to compensation plans as appropriate.
  • Working closely with clinical and operational leaders across Tufts Medicine, the CVSL Physician Executive will ensure Tufts Medicine is staying at the forefront of alternative payment models and maintaining value added relationships with industry and payor partners, and in doing so, leading the service line in the development of strategies that focus on continuous quality improvement, efficient clinical delivery, and maximizing patient value.
  • Collaborates across TM and ensures consistency in quality; assures patient safety; evaluates clinical service protocols and represents the CVSL as appropriate on hospital and ambulatory committees.
  • Ensures compliance with internal and external regulatory and safety requirements with Joint Commission and other accrediting agencies.
  • Promotes continuity of care across the full continuum of care.
  • Achieves business and clinical objectives using an interdisciplinary approach with other physicians and multiple departments.
  • Serves as a member of the team to address multifaceted issues.
  • Effectively communicates with leadership and diverse work groups across the disciplines and subsidiaries spanning the full inpatient and outpatient continuum of care.
  • Model exemplar leadership for the Cardiovascular Services across all Tufts Medicine entities to ensure consistency and implementation of best practice programs, clinical standardization, and development of Tufts Medicine and Cardiovascular Service Line endorsed protocols.
  • Promotes continual assessment of health equity across the service line, and partner with administrative leadership to establish strategies and tactics that ensure equitable access for all populations and communities to cardiovascular services at Tufts Medicine.
  • Participates in development and monitoring of process improvement activities.
  • Is engaged with Cardiovascular Service Line physicians and physician leaders to ensure needs are being met consistently and that staff and physician satisfaction and engagement remain high.
  • Acts as liaison between physicians, staff, and Tufts Medicine to achieve quality care using accepted, published guidelines for best practice and measurable outcomes.
  • Participates in community health programs and serves on community boards in relationship to the service line discipline, if appropriate. Promotes continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Accountable to the Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine for all academic programs and processes, including Tufts University School of Medicine academic appointments and promotions.
  • Leads efforts to support new approaches to clinical research, innovation, education and patient outcomes through advancement of collaborative efforts and direct participation in the Cardiovascular Center for Research & Innovation and the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute.
  • Partners with the Tufts University School of Medicine Chairs of Medicine and Surgery for innovative support of all cardiovascular service line ACGME and non-A CGME accredited training programs, as well as all Tufts University School of Medicine training programs, including addressing the needs and meeting all ACGME and LCME requirements.
  • Collaborates with medical staff and other physician executives to assure all stakeholder perspectives are represented in decision-making and strategy execution.
  • Leads cardiovascular service line physician recruitment efforts at Tufts Medical Center, collaborates with employed cardiology practice leaders for physician recruitment in the community.
  • Actively works to facilitate physician and advanced practice provider retention, engagement and alignment across the Tufts Medicine Integrated Network.
  • On a regular cadence, the cardiovascular service line physician executive will update the Tufts Medicine cardiovascular service line executive committee on current and potential partnership activities in their respective specialties, including increased local care capabilities, coordination of patient care activities and protocol adoption.

Persistent inequity in survival after atrial fibrillation

Persistent inequity in survival after atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation, also known as AF or Afib, is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases. In fact, one in three individuals can expect to be diagnosed by the condition, which increases the risk of serious complications such as heart failure and stroke. Despite significant advances in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, a new Danish study from Aalborg University shows that social inequities in survival have remained virtually unchanged over the past 20 years. The article has just been published in the internationally recognized journal The Lancet Public Health in collaboration with the University of Liverpool, Tufts Medical Center in Boston, and Boston University. The study is based on nationwide Danish registry data from more than 380,000 patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation between 2000 and 2022 and documents inequities in income, education, and social relationships still have a major impact on life expectancy after diagnosis. Individuals diagnosed with AF who have a low income live on average 2.5 years shorter than those with high income. Low educational level results in a loss of 1.8 years of life, while living alone costs about 1.6 years. "Advances in the management and treatment of atrial fibrillation have improved survival for everyone but have not closed the gap between social groups. This is clearly a problem in a tax-funded universal healthcare system with formally equal access to treatment for all - especially when we know how much prevention can actually matter," says the study's lead author, Nicklas Vinter, MD, PhD, and postdoctoral researcher at the Danish Center for Health Services Research at Aalborg University. He also points out that the global incidence of atrial fibrillation is rising, making the results relevant far beyond Denmark's borders. This is clearly a problem in a tax-funded universal healthcare system with formally equal access to treatment for all - especially when Adsl Aau know how much prevention can actually matter. Social and structural barriers must be addressed. According to Nicklas Vinter, the causes of inequity are not only linked to medical treatment but also to social and behavioral factors. For some patients, treatment guidelines can be difficult to understand and translate into concrete action, and many lack a social network that can provide practical support in everyday life. Therefore, the researchers behind the study propose a new tool, FAIR-PRO-AF, which can help decision-makers and researchers across sectors systematically reduce inequity and create continuous improvements. The tool is designed as a circular work cycle: first, the social factors associated with survival are mapped. Next, the barriers that hinder equity in access, quality, and effectiveness of treatment are identified. In the third step, concrete initiatives are prioritized and implemented, and finally, the effect is evaluated before the cycle moves on to the next round. "The social and structural barriers that limit patients' access to knowledge, resources, and support must be addressed if we want to improve prognoses for all. This requires a broader effort where the healthcare system collaborates with social and political actors," says Nicklas Vinter.
