Position Description

The McGill University Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is currently inviting applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal in the province of Quebec. Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The incumbent must demonstrate aptitude and interest in pursuing academic studies (i.e., clinical and/or basic research), and provide surgical and medical retina care. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate interest and proficiency in uveitis, ocular oncology, and ocular ultrasonography. The incumbent will be called upon to take a leading role in future departmental projects such as telemedicine and advanced surgical techniques.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in relevant aspects of a university-affiliated ophthalmology department (e.g., clinical duties, education, and research). They will provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to medical students, residents, and clinical fellows. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative independent research program to pursue scholarly activities, ideally externally funded. Clinical resources, allocation of operating time, and infrastructure support will be commensurate with needs. 
 

The successful candidate will also be expected to be involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold, or be eligible for, licensure as an ophthalmologist in the province of Quebec;
• Have completed advanced training (e.g., subspecialty fellowship and/or advanced degree(s) such as an MPH, or equivalent);
• Have expertise in research and demonstrated collaboration in conducting clinical studies;
• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

• Expertise in Ocular Oncology: Proven interest and clinical proficiency in ocular oncology, offering the potential to expand and strengthen subspecialty care within the department;
• Institutional Engagement: A willingness and ability to contribute to broader institutional goals through active participation in both academic and administrative initiatives;
• Collaborative Leadership in Retina Service: A collegial and team-oriented approach to managing a high-volume retina service, including shared responsibilities during regular clinical hours and after-hours care.
