Requirements
  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing
  • Current Texas Board of Nursing (or Compact State) RN license; Or a Temporary Texas RN License (Permanent TX license within 90 days upon hire)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, within 7 days of hire
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional direct patient care to a diverse population and function as an expert in the Med/Surg specialty, including nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, and maintaining medical records.
  • Coach and mentor department staff in clinical and professional practice areas.
  • Role model compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional health care team.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities with high-level contributions at the bedside, unit, service line, and across the institution.
  • Lead unit and shared governance activities.
  • Serve as charge nurse as needed.
  • Assess the unit's needs related to practice and improvement opportunities.
  • Serve as clinical resource for unit and hospital staff.
  • Coordinate unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.
  • Provide oversight for student/new employee preceptorships.
  • Collaborate to foster healthy relationships in the work environment, such as conflict mitigation.
  • Advocate for a balanced workload, promotes positive behaviors, and promotes peer-to-peer accountability.
  • Improve nurse satisfaction by serving as a role model and mentor, facilitating teamwork with RNs and non-licensed and interprofessional staff, as evidenced by the annual RN-RN teamwork score and interprofessional relationship score.
  • Provide recommendations to improve department scores for turnover/retention.
  • Lead patient and family-centered care standards.
  • Mentor others regarding specialty populations.
  • Practice in a manner congruent with cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
  • Develop, update, and communicate a plan of care, including discharge, in partnership with the patient, family, and interprofessional health care team using the nursing process.
  • Prioritize care based on patients' needs, abilities, and preferences.
  • Advocate on patient/family's behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Develop appropriate resources and supports unit practices and guidelines.
  • Develop and implement effective patient teaching strategies based on learning needs; plan for care after discharge; ensure comprehension.
  • Consistently evaluate the patient's comprehension and adapt teaching methods.
  • Drives department activities to improve department score for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability.
  • Model standards of care related to the nursing process.
  • Provide care as the staff nurse leader to complex patients and lead interprofessional team in implementing plan of care.
  • Anticipate/prevent and recognize/resolves early declines in patient condition and emergent situations.
  • Manage assignment of complex patients and other unit demands.
  • Recognize, determine plan of action, and respond to rapid response/CERTs and emergency codes.
  • Model standards related to regulatory requirements and professional practice.
  • Role model highly developed assessment, clinical documentation, leadership, and analytical skills; integrate and contribute to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, and protocols; lead improvements in patient safety-related processes at unit/service line level.
  • Contribute to development of service line and hospital standards and guidelines; lead opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement.
  • Investigate and incorporate evidence-based practices presented to shared governance and leadership.
  • Lead initiatives to improve quality and safety scores through peer-to-peer accountability; report near misses and identify solutions with interprofessional team.
  • Role model situational awareness; use teachable moments to improve safety.
  • Audit the plan of care and other areas as needed; model independent time management and prioritization; minimize incidental overtime.
  • Collaborate with interprofessional team to facilitate patient throughput efficiently to meet goals.
  • Implement department strategies to achieve financial target and mentor others to do the same through timely documentation of care, decreasing length of stay, optimizing efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime, and other areas according to department specifications.
  • Expand individual nursing knowledge and coach staff to grow.
  • Serve as the clinical resource.
  • Develop and disseminate informational/educational resources and programs to improve quality and professional practice.
  • Support change initiatives and adapt to unexpected changes.
  • Foster identification and implementation of innovative solutions to improve patient care or unit operations (e.g., reduction of hospital readmissions) by leading/participating in unit projects and shared governance.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
