Position Description:
The McGill University Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in collaboration with the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) invite applications for a Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Research) with a focus on research areas at the interface of translational oncology, cancer cell biology and/or biomedical engineering. The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join an academic and high-volume comprehensive Division of Thoracic Surgery at the MUHC—a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
The McGill Division of Thoracic Surgery is a world-renowned group of clinician and basic scientists investigating all malignancies of the chest and manages one of North America’s highest volume of thoracic oncology patients. As a result, the successful applicant will have facilitated and longitudinal access to patients, many of whom are concurrently enrolled in clinical trials, with mature tissue collection and processing pipelines.The Division has developed an extensive experience in the latest bio-banking technology resulting in a unique resource of clinically and genomically annotated, live banked esophageal, gastric, and lung patient-derived organoids and xenografts representing one of the largest living biorepositories of thoracic cancers globally (>400 tumors).

The RI-MUHC is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital-based research centre and is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) comprising over 3,000 researchers and trainees, supported by a suite of innovative technical core facilities. The Goodman Cancer Institute is home to internationally recognised researchers and supports state of the art platforms for functional precision oncology and multi-omics approaches. The Biomedical Engineering Department at McGill was the first such department in Canada and its members invented the artificial cell and pioneered discoveries, innovation and clinical applications in diagnosis, imaging and therapy.
Job Duties:
The successful candidate will be the recipient of an endowed research chair from the Jarislowsky Foundation, ensuring a competitive salary and benefit from a highly collaborative and well-funded environment within the Division of Thoracic Surgery, as well as the Cancer Research Program of the RI-MUCH, the Goodman Cancer Institute, and the Biomedical Engineering Department at McGill University.
This unique job opportunity is open to all exceptional candidates regardless of their current area of oncology research. However, priority areas include cancer cell biology, novel cancer model systems and bioengineering approaches to cancer, proteo-genomics, cancer immunology and drug discovery/development. Given the source of funding for the endowed chair, a principal, but not exclusive, research focus of the candidate should include thoracic (e.g. lung) or upper gastrointestinal (e.g. esophagus or stomach) malignancies, or easily translatable to one of these cancers.
The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Responsibilities of this position include:
Develop an independent, externally funded research program of the highest international standards in their own areas of expertise, this program is expected to include interdisciplinary collaborations with relevant partner units within the Cancer Research Program of the RI-MUHC, the Goodman Cancer Institute at McGill University, and Biomedical Engineering;
Disseminate research findings through high impact peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation and exchange activities;
Participate in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission including teaching, supervision of a diverse body of graduate students, and service to the scholarly community;
Contribute to the research mission of the RI-MUHC and McGill University;
Be committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
The successful candidate must:
Have a Ph.D. with significant post-doctoral experience;
Have Post-Doctoral Fellowship in cancer research with evidence of exceptional research achievements;
Provide a compelling research vision that aligns with, or is applicable to, the McGill Division of Thoracic Surgery’s core mission to improve outcomes for patients suffering from disease and malignancies of the chest and foregut;
Possess proven published experience in cancer biology and/or bioengineering;
Have evidence of strong research productivity, with a demonstrated ability to attract competitive funding;
Have the ability to collaborate effectively and create synergies with colleagues and stakeholders from a diverse background;
Fluency in English is essential; a working knowledge of French, or a commitment to acquiring it within a few years of appointment is preferred.
