Requirements
  • Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws degree from an accredited law school.
  • A Texas State Bar license to practice law in Texas.
  • A Texas operator's driver's license.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Penal Code and Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.
  • Knowledge of the legal elements of felonies from capital murder to theft.
  • Thorough knowledge of judicial principles and criminal and civil law and procedures, including constitutional and statutory law.
  • Ability to analyze and appraise facts, procedures, and legal precedents affecting complex court cases.
  • Ability to present facts and legal precedents effectively in court and in writing.

Responsibilities
  • Screen and review felony cases, including complex or sensitive cases, to determine legal and factual sufficiency and direct the gathering of additional information.
  • Draft charging instruments and complete intake on felony and misdemeanor cases.
  • Confer with the District Attorney, supervisors, defense attorneys, investigators, law enforcement officials, probation authorities, victims, witnesses, and other parties concerning assigned cases.
  • Read briefs and trial records and conduct legal analysis and research to remain current on relevant law.
  • Conduct investigations and negotiations to determine recommendations for court action.
  • Prepare and try felony cases in District Court.
  • Research and brief legal issues related to cases and potential appeals.
  • Negotiate with defense attorneys and confer with victims regarding pleas.
  • Ensure the issuance or creation of subpoenas, motions, writs, warrants, and other legal documents.
  • Respond to correspondence from persons requesting information from the department.
  • Assist clerical and legal secretarial staff, victim assistance coordinators, witness coordinators, and investigators as needed.
  • Use a computer to process, retrieve, and disseminate information.
  • Interview witnesses and victims and prepare them for trial.
  • Write appellate briefs when needed.
  • Assign and review the work of Legal Secretaries and Paralegals.
  • Train employees, plan and assign work, direct work, and resolve problems.
  • Remain on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed by the Department Head.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Three years of work experience as an attorney, preferably criminal.
  • License to practice in Federal District Court is preferred.
