Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required within two years of the hire date.
  • A current Illinois registered nurse license is required.
  • At least three years of registered nurse experience with demonstrated progressive leadership or management skills is required.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the American Nurses Credentialing Center Pathway to Excellence Recognition Program model and standards is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of nurse-sensitive quality indicators and basic hospital and nursing regulatory requirements is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assume 24-hour accountability for unit management and the quality of patient care on designated units.
  • Create and maintain a work environment conducive to effective communication, collaboration, team building, and nursing professionalism.
  • Ensure implementation of Pathway to Excellence Program requirements on the unit.
  • Ensure care is appropriate to the ages of patients served and staff are competent to provide safe, quality, evidence-based nursing care.
  • Maintain positive physician, interdepartmental, and employee relationships and morale.
  • Coordinate patient-care management with unit staff, other departments, and nursing supervisors.
  • Serve as a leader, mentor, and patient advocate, identifying, introducing, and assimilating change into the practice environment.
  • Recruit, interview, select, and retain unit-based staff.
  • Schedule personnel to assure quality patient care within budget requirements.
  • Monitor, provide feedback on, appraise, and take corrective or disciplinary action regarding staff performance as necessary.
  • Hold regular staff meetings and facilitate communication of organizational changes and unit issues.
  • Support staff growth and development opportunities and recognize achievements.
  • Participate in annual budget preparation and identify needed capital equipment and staffing requirements.
  • Establish supply quotas, analyze financial and productivity reports, review expenditures and operating statements, and implement corrective action plans for variances.
  • Design and implement cost-effective strategies to improve patient-care delivery.
  • Educate staff about unit operations and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Engage staff in developing annual unit goals and individual goals aligned with organizational and nursing strategic priorities.
  • Develop mechanisms to fulfill unit goals and objectives and regularly review action plans with staff.
  • Identify quality-improvement opportunities and use appropriate quality-improvement tools and techniques to evaluate solutions.
  • Lead intra- and interdepartmental problem solving and support adoption of best practices.
  • Evaluate standards of care, measure outcomes, and validate that identified outcomes are met.
  • Ensure unit performance data is gathered, monitored, reported, and used to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Promote analytical thinking, evidence-based nursing practice, nursing research, and scholarship activities.
  • Foster collaborative research relationships with healthcare institutions and healthcare providers.
  • Attend Nurse Management Council and Department Managers' meetings and relay pertinent information to staff.
  • Build and maintain a Unit-Based Council to facilitate shared decision-making.
  • Develop working relationships with medical staff and promote interdepartmental and intraprofessional collaboration.
  • Maintain current knowledge of clinical treatments, nursing practice trends, healthcare developments, and reimbursement issues.
  • Perform other related work as required or requested.
