Requirements
  • Experience as a spokesperson for a high-profile institution in a large media market.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to make professional presentations to executive-level participants in group and one-on-one settings.
  • Demonstrated reporting and writing skills, including identifying story placement opportunities and thinking strategically about communications and social media applications.
  • Ability to anticipate public events that can advance institutional objectives.
  • Thorough knowledge of current events, issues, and developments concerning institutional operations.
  • Knowledge of issues facing public institutions of higher education.
  • At least 10 years of full-time professional media experience, preferably in new media and/or television news.
  • Demonstrated record of successful national, regional, and local media relations planning, implementation, and placement.
  • Extensive contacts with ethnic, California, and national media, and ability to work with journalists at all skill levels, including student journalists.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of news media operations and protocols, especially the news-gathering process.
  • Experience writing op-ed and analysis pieces.
  • Ability to work effectively with independent news media.
  • Superior strategic thinking, planning, program design, and implementation skills.
  • Solid professional judgment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for interacting effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, and external constituents.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills to manage professional staff, including delegation, work prioritization, training, evaluation, and employee professional development.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including prioritizing assignments and completing work on time and by deadlines.
  • Knowledge of software and multimedia applications, including systems used to broadcast news.
  • Ability to work reliably and be present in the workplace during normal working hours.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and after hours as needed.
  • A satisfactory background investigation and Live Scan background check are required for employment.
Responsibilities
  • Support the management of sensitive, high-visibility issues and media inquiries.
  • Develop messaging and coordinate responses related to campus operations, public safety, student affairs, litigation, and other complex matters.
  • Monitor emerging issues and help execute communications strategies.
  • Provide strategic advising to support consistent, responsive, and effective communications.
  • Manage professional staff through delegation and prioritization of work, training, evaluation, and professional development.
  • Use media relations, issues management, crisis communications, and strategic advising to support UCLA's mission and reputation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience managing crisis communications, including developing emergency management and crisis communications plans.
  • Working knowledge of the University, its organization and structure, and the roles and responsibilities of academic and administrative units.
  • Working knowledge of UC and UCLA policies, regulations, guidelines, and programming resources.
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
