Requirements
  • A college diploma in a Social Sciences field or equivalent experience is required.
  • Previous experience with people experiencing homelessness is an asset, ideally one to three years.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of women's issues is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mental health and addictions is required.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of, and commitment to, anti-racism, anti-oppression, and equity are required.
  • Problem-solving skills and a high degree of confidentiality are required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and graphing, and database computer skills are essential.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team is required.
  • Good interpersonal and time-management skills are required.
  • Good knowledge of community resources is required.
  • The ability to successfully undergo applicable screening and background checks, including an Abuse Registry check and vulnerable sector check, is required.

Responsibilities
  • Promote a comfortable and safe Drop-In Centre environment where street-involved clients feel engaged and participate in healthy activities.
  • Facilitate client orientation by collecting basic required information, providing requested information, and explaining Drop-In regulations and schedules.
  • Record client information in the appropriate places.
  • Provide outreach clients with access to meals, showers, toiletries, and towels.
  • Facilitate commencement of the RRTIP for outreach clients.
  • Assist with supervision of clients.
  • Complete clerical duties for client documentation, including Drop-In Services Forms, computer entries, log book entries, and toiletries and towel records.
  • Report safety issues arising in the Drop-In Centre to the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Build rapport with clients.
  • Ensure clients accessing the Drop-In Centre are aware of Belinda's Place services and refer them to the appropriate department or staff when necessary.
  • Provide crisis counseling, one-on-one support and brief intervention, advocacy, and case management.
  • Maintain relevant referral sources and pertinent programs that benefit clients, including community contacts.
  • Gather and present program statistics and other pertinent information in monthly and annual reports.
  • Record interactions and transactions, including donations received, according to policy.
  • Enforce agency rules and expectations consistently.
  • Complete and record taxi vouchers and transit tickets according to policy.
  • Provide high-needs or low-functioning clients with additional individual informal counseling.
  • Organize clubs and groups within the shelter to increase critical thinking and encourage clients to participate in the community and take civic action.
  • Keep the Drop-In Centre clean and orderly and shut off computers and lights at the end of each day.
  • Conduct regular facility security, safety, and maintenance checks according to policy.
  • Report physical facility or building problems to the Program Services Coordinator.
  • Promote positive and supportive attitudes toward clients experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Promote programs and activities that empower clients to work toward their goals.
  • Act as an advocate and positive role model for clients in the community.
  • Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with community members, representatives of other departments, agencies, and coworkers while representing The Salvation Army.
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Make suggestions to improve efficiency, working conditions, or procedures when required and applicable.
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
