Requirements
  • A master's degree in Mathematics or Statistics, or a related field, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics from a mathematics or statistics department.
  • Thorough knowledge of mathematics sufficient to teach courses from algebra through differential equations, including familiarity with current curricular issues in community college mathematics instruction.
  • Proficiency in using and instructing students in graphing calculators and appropriate mathematics software or applications.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite or an equivalent.
  • Familiarity with appropriate instructional and course management software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with small and large groups, with advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills, proficiency in designing and grading tests, and ability to create effective instructional materials.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and administration in support of department and college initiatives.
Responsibilities
  • Teach a full range of mathematics courses from developmental mathematics through statistics, calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.
  • Prepare and deliver learning activities to achieve course outcomes.
  • Develop course syllabi using the assigned syllabus shell, including evaluation procedures and assignment calendars in accordance with course outlines.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes during scheduled times using department-approved texts.
  • Follow department guidelines for course content and instructional best practices.
  • Meet all classes on scheduled dates, arrive on time, and conduct classes for the fully allotted time.
  • Respect the Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction when teaching online.
  • Use appropriate classroom management techniques and technology.
  • Use the college's course management system for assigned courses and department matters.
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite and other required, approved, and Owens-system-compatible programs.
  • Submit electronic copies of syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other requested documents to the department course management site.
  • Access the Owens email account at least every other day and respond to required messages within 48 hours.
  • Check the campus mailbox at least once a week.
  • Respond to student inquiries outside class in a timely manner and meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class.
  • Assign grades to student work and return graded work in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and report attendance by published deadlines.
  • Maintain an accurate electronic grade book.
  • Report final grades to the Records Office by the deadline and submit electronic copies of the grade book and attendance records.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the college.
  • Attend department and college workshops, training sessions, development activities, and meetings as needed or necessary.
  • Participate in student learning assessment activities and perform other assigned departmental duties.
  • Support the college, School of STEM, and department missions, visions, and core values.
  • Maintain professional and collegial interactions with students, colleagues, supervisors, and the college community.
