Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, engineering technology, engineering, or operations management, or an equivalent qualification through progressive control room and operations center leadership.
  • At least 5 years of experience in control room or operations center environments, including at least 2 years leading a shift, desk, or team with ownership of response.
  • Practical experience with alarm management, including ownership or material improvement of an alarm philosophy, severity structure, or response playbook set.
  • Experience running live incidents end to end, including triage, dispatch, escalation, communication, and after-action activities.
  • A track record of enforcing vendor or platform service-level agreements using independent data rather than self-reported performance.
  • Fluency with analytics, including building and interpreting dashboards, reconciling data across systems, and producing actionable performance reporting.
Responsibilities
  • Own 24/7 fleet monitoring and remote triage through the outsourced network operations center vendor, including alarm philosophy, severity matrix adoption, response playbooks, and escalation paths.
  • Stand up and run the in-house daytime desk for business-hours monitoring and triage, daily vendor handoff, and independent verification of vendor performance.
  • Dispatch Site Operations and original equipment manufacturers or vendors, escalate engineering issues to the Principal Engineer, and own work-order and service-ticket flow with the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Serve as the 24/7 real-time operational point of contact for utility grid operators and continuously verify that each asset follows its automated dispatch schedule.
  • Maintain the official system-of-record event log for alarms, actions, dispatches, and grid-operator communications.
  • Own the fleet's inbound call line, routing site, fire department, and other agency calls to Central Operations for triage, logging, and dispatch.
  • Own the fleet's operational data by ingesting high-volume telemetry and market data and turning it into summaries, reports, and dashboards for the department and leadership.
  • Run the outsourced network operations center and own the roadmap and in-house capability plan for bringing it in-house as the fleet scales.
  • Coordinate with Construction and Development before handover so monitoring playbooks, alarm configuration, and dispatch are ready before projects come online.
  • Start hands-on across the desk and analytics, then build and lead the control-center and performance and markets teams until they perform nearly all the work.
  • Monitor state of health and round-trip efficiency against warranty curves and assemble and transmit validated technical data packages to the Commercial Asset Manager for claim initiation.
  • Provide revenue strategy, market intelligence, and operating constraints for the automated dispatch engine and own the feedback loop into the asset technology platform.
  • Audit market revenue statements against internal meter and telemetry data, conduct performance back-testing, and own official performance dashboards.
  • Manage the network operations center vendor commercially and operationally through service-level agreement scorecards, quarterly business reviews, joint drills, and insource-versus-vendor evaluations.
  • Build and lead the Central Operations team by hiring, training, and developing the Daytime Desk Operator and Performance and Markets Analyst.
  • Serve as the real-time operational point of contact for Con Edison and the New York Independent System Operator, managing VDER/DLM event dispatch, telemetry, and grid-operator communications.
  • Coordinate with peer managers to dispatch Site Operations for on-site response, track work orders to closure, escalate complex technical events to the Principal Engineer, and transmit validated warranty, performance, revenue, and reconciliation data to the Commercial Asset Manager.
Desired Qualifications
  • Exposure to New York Independent System Operator, Value of Distributed Energy Resources, or Distributed Energy Resources market operations, including dispatch, settlements, or enrollment mechanics.
  • Any level of North American Electric Reliability Corporation certification or familiarity with a North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection environment.
  • Battery Energy Storage System or renewable fleet monitoring experience and depth with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition or Energy Management System platforms.
  • Settlement audit or revenue-assurance experience.
  • Experience building or scaling a monitoring function, desk, or control room from scratch.

What believers are saying

  • Ultra Capital's July 2026 investment finances faster NYC deployment and team expansion.
  • NYC reliability deficits through 2036 create urgent demand for distributed storage solutions.
  • Orenda's 2026 pipeline of 920 MW and 2.7 GWh signals large near-term project volume.

What critics are saying

  • Con Edison's August 2025 two-part test inflated upgrade costs from millions to tens of millions.
  • Orenda's 250 MW pre-August queue faces stranded economics unless PSC reverses Con Edison soon.
  • Execution depends on New York City approvals; a prolonged queue freeze kills the 920 MW pipeline.

What makes Orenda unique

  • Orenda leads Con Edison SIR queue with 176 active applications and 33% capacity.
  • Its 2026 Ultra Capital round added board support for dense-urban battery execution.
  • North Sky backed over 40 sites and 200 MW, validating downstate New York focus.

Orenda closes growth equity investment from Ultra Capital.

Orenda closes growth equity investment from Ultra Capital. Investment to expand distributed battery storage in New York. New York, NY, July 15, 2026 - Orenda, a New York-based renewable energy developer, today announced the closing of a growth equity investment from Ultra Capital, an investment firm focused on sustainable infrastructure and energy transition. The investment will support Orenda's strategy to scale the deployment of distributed battery storage across New York City and the downstate region. New York City's grid is strained. High demand, limited transmission, and constrained generation have raised power prices, blocked new load, and left little reserve margin during peak demand or outages. Orenda's distributed battery storage addresses this directly, adding reliability and flexibility to the grid while lowering costs across the system. With strong state and city policy behind clean energy and grid resilience, New York City is one of the most attractive battery storage markets in the country right now. "Grid infrastructure is aging, energy costs are rising, and battery manufacturing is ramping up fast across the country. Those forces are converging right now," said Bill Grinstead, Chief Executive Officer of Orenda. "Ultra Capital brings deep experience in energy infrastructure and a track record of scaling operating platforms. This investment lets us expand the capabilities of our team and move faster to bring battery storage online across New York City." In conjunction with its investment, Mike Reynolds, Partner at Ultra Capital, has joined Orenda's Board of Directors. "Orenda has assembled a highly experienced team with a strong track record in project development, execution, and navigating complex urban power markets," said Reynolds. "The company's growing pipeline and disciplined approach position it to establish market-leading intellectual property in distributed battery storage. We believe Orenda is uniquely positioned to build and scale a best-in-class platform for deploying batteries at the distribution level in urban environments, and we are excited to support the team's next phase of growth." About Orenda Orenda develops, builds, owns, and operates battery energy storage projects in dense urban environments, with a development pipeline of 920 MW and 2.7 GWh across Downstate New York. Founded in 2020, the company pairs this infrastructure with proprietary asset management technology to close the gap between renewable generation and electricity demand. Orenda's mission is to make the grid more resilient and sustainable in Downstate New York. About Ultra Capital Ultra Capital provides equity capital to best-in-class management teams focused on the energy transition. Orenda invest growth equity and asset capital in companies with a successful track record of deploying demonstrated solutions in various sectors including solar, battery storage, distributed generation, EV charging, and fleet electrification. Orenda bring value to its partnerships through its experience as former developers, constructors, operators, and financiers of infrastructure assets.
