  • Hold a current Alabama Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.
  • Have American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training.
  • Be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Be physically present onsite and able to perform the essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking; lift and carry 50 pounds with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; push a stretcher or wheelchair with an average adult patient; stoop frequently and occasionally crouch, crawl, or kneel; reach reasonable distances in any direction; run in emergency situations; move fingers in a coordinated manner; and perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with the fingertips.
  • Use common protective or safety equipment and work around human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Administer compassionate care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse while maintaining nursing practice standards and therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Encourage team members, support their contributions, and supervise PCAs, PCAs/US, US, and technicians.
  • Collect and document ongoing patient data, including systems review and behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform basic and advanced nursing tasks appropriate to the department or unit, including blood glucose testing, Foley catheter insertion and removal, NGT insertion and removal, enteral feeding, medication administration, medication reconciliation, receiving authorized medical orders, developing a plan of care for stable patients, wound care, peripheral IV therapy, IV piggyback medication administration via CVLs except dialysis access devices, and blood and blood product administration.
  • Participate in team conferences, care planning, problem identification, and team shift reports.
  • Provide and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Report and document abnormal or significant findings to the Registered Nurse, including symptoms, abnormal drainage, reactions, treatment responses, medication responses, and changes in patient condition.
  • Document all patient care activities and observations according to policies and procedures.
  • Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on improvement teams, assisting with measures, and implementing necessary changes.
  • Perform initial and annual competency requirements for the job class.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards established in performance evaluations.
  • Follow employee handbook compliance requirements, DCH behavioral standards, DCH Health System policies and procedures, and safety practices.
  • Use electronic mail, time-and-attendance software, learning-management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
