Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent educational training is required.
  • The ability to read and write English, perform mathematical calculations, and understand and use blueprints, wiring diagrams, and electrical schematics is required.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and regulations is required.
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in the electrical trade or an equivalent combination of formal training and experience is required.
  • A minimum of 5–6 years of total experience, including apprenticeship time, is required.
  • Employees must use, wear, and utilize University-specified safety equipment as prescribed.
  • Employees must observe safe work practices at all times as specified by OSHA or other regulations.
  • Depending on the functional area, a valid motor vehicle operator's license and the ability to operate vehicles safely may be required.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours when assigned is required.
  • A working telephone is required so the electrician can be reached at irregular hours for call-in duty.
  • The current phone number and address must be kept on file with the Trade Supervisor and Department office.
Responsibilities
  • Install, test, and repair electric light and power distribution circuits and networks.
  • Maintain high- and low-voltage power systems, including control systems and communication systems, using electrical layouts and wiring diagrams.
  • Perform work in compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
  • Inspect, test, and maintain electrical lighting, signal, communication, and power distribution circuits and equipment.
  • Isolate equipment and component failures in switches, motors, control panels, and other electrical equipment using electrical test equipment.
  • Perform layout work for electrical maintenance and construction operations.
  • Install new panel boxes, circuits, and feeder lines to meet load conditions.
  • Perform electrical maintenance on elevators, hoists, conveyors, electric motors, and lighting systems.
  • Perform complex wiring, installation, and troubleshooting on motors, generators, switches, transformers, electric clocks and time systems, intercom systems, paging systems, fuse panels, alarm and signal systems, heating appliances, electric ovens, and similar specialized electrical devices.
  • Replace or exchange defective mechanical components and electrical parts according to electrical and mechanical schematic diagrams.
  • Perform basic and routine work commonly assigned to other trades when incidental to electrical work or required during emergencies.
  • Pull and install cable, including underground cable.
  • Install transformers, disconnect switches, bus structures, and fuses.
  • Install and maintain control lighting for orchestra and opera productions, if applicable.
  • Work from blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and verbal instructions.
  • Perform other related duties requiring comparable knowledge, skill, and responsibility as requested.
