Requirements
  • Hold a current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or a current multistate Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Have three years of healthcare clinical experience.
  • Have knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Have knowledge of third-party payers.
  • Maintain a confidential home office space.
  • Be available to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, tact and diplomacy, computer proficiency, customer service, and telephone etiquette.
  • Be able to read and comprehend information, communicate effectively, and operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Examine medical records and develop concise, pertinent clinical reviews to support authorization, avoid payment denial, and optimize reimbursement.
  • Perform initial and concurrent utilization reviews for patients admitted or placed in outpatient status with observation services.
  • Communicate medical necessity to applicable payers.
  • Review, assess, and evaluate clinical information used to support utilization management decisions based on medical record documentation.
  • Facilitate professional communication to complete the authorization process in a patient-centered manner while adhering to quality and timeline standards.
  • Compile concise and pertinent clinical reviews from medical records.
  • Collaborate with utilization review coordinators, clinical appeals staff, and physician advisors to prevent and manage concurrent denials.
  • Advocate for patients and the hospital with insurance companies to optimize reimbursement and hospital stay coverage.
  • Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team as outlined in the system utilization management plan.
  • Document clinical reviews and payer communications in a timely and comprehensive manner.
  • Maintain working knowledge of payer requirements.
  • Communicate concurrent denials to appropriate team members in a timely manner.
  • Provide reconsideration clinicals to payers to prevent denials.
  • Liaise with hospital case management as necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintain processes for determining appropriate admission status based on regulatory and reimbursement requirements of commercial and government payers.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of applicable federal regulations and Conditions of Participation.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives with various departments and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Manage a diverse workload in a fast-paced, changing regulatory environment.
  • Identify treatment delays or inappropriate utilization and serve as a resource.
  • Coordinate communication with physicians and collaborate to ensure appropriate patient status.
  • Identify, develop, and provide orientation, training, and competency development for appropriate staff and colleagues.
  • Promote teamwork and the revenue cycle process continuum within high-performing teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have experience with medical management for Medicare and/or Medicaid populations.
  • Have utilization management experience.
  • Have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, an Associate of Science in Nursing degree or Diploma, or current enrollment in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with completion within three years of hire.
