Requirements
  • Minimum five years of leadership experience within a hospital or health system, including success leading the medical staff function to drive results.
  • MD or DO from an accredited program.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, or Emergency Medicine.
  • An active unrestricted Alaska medical license, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Current clinical-practice certifications such as BLS, PALS, and ACLS as required by the practice location.
  • A record of implementing evidence-based practice within an integrated delivery system.
  • Knowledge of human resources management concepts, quality improvement, DNV and CMS accreditation standards, EMTALA, HIPAA, HRSA, healthcare risk management, medical ethics, and medical malpractice principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel 30% of the time by jet, small aircraft, or ferry.
  • Ability to work an occasional hospital shift alongside hospital colleagues.
  • Ability to lift and/or move 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure delivery of inpatient medical care services at Wrangell Medical Center.
  • Lead hospital-based physicians and advanced practice providers, including direct reports.
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, credentialing, provider enrollment, annual evaluations, collaborative physician agreements, mentoring, corrective action, and quality review.
  • Ensure provider and call schedules are completed by the hospital leader at each site.
  • Serve as Physician Advisor to the consortium care coordination department when needed and participate in the Utilization Review Committee.
  • Assess barriers to effective patient flow and implement strategies, corrective actions, and interventions to improve efficiency and provider experience.
  • Champion clinical quality improvement, service optimization, access to care, customer service, and health-system value.
  • Develop quality measures and lead efforts to improve clinical performance for DNV, HRSA, and SEARHC strategic initiatives.
  • Assist with DNV and HRSA accreditation requirements and maintain ongoing clinical compliance.
  • Work with the Chief Information Officer and Chief Medical Officer to improve medical staff use of electronic health records.
  • Update physician recruitment plans and participate in physician recruitment and interviewing.
  • Monitor resource use and support financially responsible standards for equipment, supplies, procedures, and technology utilization.
  • Recommend staffing, capital, and non-payroll expense budget items with the operational dyad partner or hospital administrator.
  • Develop communication strategies that build trust, motivate, inform, promote information exchange, and enhance teamwork between providers and executive leadership.
  • Serve as chief liaison between SEARHC senior leadership and the Wrangell Medical Center inpatient medical staff and APPs.
  • Facilitate communication among hospital leadership teams, SEARHC leadership, and organized medical staff leadership.
  • Conduct FPPE/OPPE peer reviews and annual assessments.
  • Provide clinical oversight of case management, infection control, and risk management.
  • Develop and implement initiatives, programs, and plans to achieve clinical, operating, and financial performance indicators.
  • Participate as a key member of SEARHC hospital leadership teams.
  • Promote provider engagement and development and improve employee engagement.
  • Ensure medical staff compliance with bylaws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Support hospital leadership and identify opportunities to improve provider recruitment and onboarding.
  • Advocate for healthcare consumers, visit hospitalized consumers, and work with community physicians on health and policy issues.
  • Build positive relationships with medical staff, organizations, and the community.
  • Develop and maintain a service-oriented, quality-focused hospital culture.
  • Serve as Long Term Care Medical Director or delegate that duty to a supervised physician.
  • Serve as Trauma Director or delegate that duty to a supervised physician and work shifts at Wrangell Medical Center to maintain trauma accreditation compliance.
  • Help develop and open new critical access hospitals in rural communities.
  • Travel regularly to SEARHC communities or leadership forums.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive organizational and healthcare information.
Desired Qualifications

  • APCA-C, HCQM, or CPHYADV certification.
  • Physician-advisor certification, or willingness to obtain it after employment.
  • Experience with DNV and ISO 9001 accreditation for quality management systems.
