Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, close attention to detail, and strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions from a supervisor and communicate clearly with Making Center users.
  • Adaptability and consistency when notifying the supervisor of schedule changes.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work without close supervision or alone.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite, including Calendar, Gmail, Docs, and Sheets.
  • Ability to handle objects weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours such as evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
  • Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment and respectful shop culture for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide customer service and maintain a positive and professional demeanor in interactions with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Report for shifts on time and review priority tasks with the supervisor.
  • Monitor patrons entering and exiting the shop space and remain available to assist them.
  • Provide information regarding department services, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform reception duties, including greeting visitors and answering phone calls and emails.
  • Assist students and faculty with reservations and equipment requests.
  • Help students check out appropriate tools for their projects.
  • Inspect returned tools and address damage, missing parts, or cleanliness issues.
  • Maintain tool organization within the shop.
  • Use ladders and assist with installing lighting equipment when assigned to the Light Lab.
  • Assist Making Center staff with shop upkeep, organization, and maintenance.
  • Open and close the shop as assigned, including unlocking resources and logging into computers.
  • Process and recycle materials.
  • Receive and organize deliveries.
  • Track and move inventory.
  • Procure purchased items for students and faculty.
  • Process and prepare materials, including wood, metal, plaster, clay, and alginate.
  • Count and track inventory.
  • Move and organize materials weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Assist with maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of machinery.
  • Replace tool parts in kits and sets.
  • Restock consumables and personal protective equipment.
  • Change blades and other machine components as needed.
  • Perform daily machinery maintenance and cleaning.
  • Control dust through vacuuming and mopping.
  • Clear surfaces and reset machines.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in training sessions and staff meetings.
