The role
We are seeking a Director Engineering API & Ecosystems to lead the development of a state-of-the-art API platform, which will be launched as a new business segment.
In this role you will be responsible for defining the technology vision, building scalable and high-performance API products, and building and leading a small but highly skilled engineering team. As the key technical leader, you will drive both the Product and Engineering efforts, ensuring that our platform is robust, secure, and widely adopted by customers.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in API development, cloud infrastructure, and machine learning, who is also passionate about building scalable businesses. You will work closely with leadership and the business responsible to align technical strategy with business goals. In a team setting with the latter, you will shape the future of API-driven data products within Statista.
Your Job
Technical & Product Leadership
Define the architecture and roadmap for a best-in-class API platform
Drive best practices in API development, infrastructure management, and security
Ensure high availability, scalability, and performance of our API services
Develop and operate product services as well as ideate and prototype new off-platform solutions (technology push) that clients love and are willing to pay for
- Customer API for accessing Statista data and services
- Solutions for integration of Statista data/services in 3rd party ecosystems
- Individual solutions for large enterprise customers
Solution consulting and sales engineering with new customers
Ability to translate business needs into technical solutions
Strong leadership, mentorship, and stakeholder management skills
Bias for action, strong collaboration capabilities & team spirit
Quality assurance for a best-in-class API platform
Team Leadership
Develop and hire a high-performing tech team for the new business segment
Recruit, mentor, and grow a world-class engineering team

Work cross-functionally to successfully manage dependencies with other departments
Your skills
Experience with large-scale external API solutions
- Expertise in search and GenAI use cases (supporting LLM deployment and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows)
- Strong understanding of authentication, security, and billing models for API products
- Experience with API metering, analytics, and customer usage tracking
Inspiring tech leader with strong street credibility for effective, cloud-native software engineering
Strong business acumen to identify and assess revenue potential of technical solutions
Strong communication skills supporting Sales team to win customers with technical expertise and the right trade-off between openness to customer needs and realistic expectation management
Ability to understand and navigate very different tech stack environments (as required by customers or 3rd party ecosystems)
Familiar with the Statista backend tech stack: aws, GitHub, Java, Typescript, PHP, datadog
Experience in similar rapid growth environments (b2b), serving large tech-heavy customers that often are leaders in their respective segment
Good judgment on when to deliver top quality and when to deliver quick& dirty
