Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience and education is required.
  • No experience is required.
  • The applicable professional license or certification must be held, including an accepted Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Microbiologist, Microbiology Technologist, Specialist in Microbiology, or equivalent state or national laboratory credential listed for the work location.
  • The role requires frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing 0–25 pounds; frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements; frequent near and distance vision, color discrimination, hearing, speech, and keyboard use; occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and handling objects weighing 25–50 pounds; and rare climbing.
Responsibilities
  • Interpret and report test results.
  • Perform routine and complex technical laboratory analyses using established procedures and protocols.
  • Perform chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Identify and isolate infectious disease-causing organisms and perform the full range of laboratory tests, from simple blood tests to complex tests.
  • Recognize unusual antimicrobial susceptibility results and troubleshoot the issue.
  • Conduct examinations on patient specimens for bacterial, viral, protozoan, and fungal infections.
  • Isolate and culture bacteria and other microorganisms in prescribed media while controlling moisture, aeration, temperature, and nutrition.
  • Receive and analyze laboratory specimens and report results in a timely manner in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Examine physiological, morphological, and cultural characteristics using a microscope to identify and classify microorganisms in human specimens.
  • Independently perform, interpret, and correlate related tests to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Interpret test reports and communicate findings to physicians.
  • Escalate unusual, critical, or abnormal results.
  • Operate complex electronic equipment, computers, and precision instruments.
  • Perform and evaluate quality-control procedures.
  • Maintain equipment and reagent accuracy by performing established preventive-maintenance procedures.
  • Assist providers in choosing appropriate laboratory tests.
  • Evaluate new testing methods.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot instruments.
  • Assist with the proper storage of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain competencies and continuing education to stay informed of new developments in the field.
  • Assist in the laboratory proficiency-testing program.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
