Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Three years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting, including lead experience, is required.
  • Certification in phlebotomy from an accredited certifying agency is required, such as PBT (ASCP), NCA, NHA, NPT, or an equivalent phlebotomy certification.
  • The employee must be able to perform the listed physical functions, including standing, walking, bending, repetitive hand and arm movements, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
  • The employee must maintain the specified visual, hearing, tactile, and, where applicable, olfactory sensory capabilities.
  • The employee must be able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required.
  • The employee must be able to work in a latex-safe environment.
  • The employee must be physically qualified for respirator use where applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Orient and train new employees and students in phlebotomy according to policies and procedures.
  • Identify supplies needed in the phlebotomy and laboratory areas and submit the information to the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Prioritize specimen collection based on routine, timed, urgent, or stat status to maintain timely and efficient workflow.
  • Prepare work schedules for the phlebotomy team.
  • Register patients according to registration policies and procedures.
  • Enter and edit ordering information in the computer system for patients and specimens to maintain accurate testing and billing records.
  • Review and print unreceived collection lists.
  • Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures to obtain suitable blood samples and correctly label specimens.
  • Assist with specimen collection when requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
