Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current state nursing licensure to practice in good standing.
  • Successful completion of Basic Life Support or Basic Cardiac Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification.
  • Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support within 90 days of employment, or documentation of current certification.
  • Successful completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 90 days of employment or documentation of current certification when pediatric care is included in the facility scope of services.
Responsibilities
  • Develop an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
  • Protect patients from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal sources.
  • Operate equipment and machinery safely and report and correct unsafe situations.
  • Handle specimens according to facility policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to standard precautions, including use of personal protective equipment.
  • Comply with Universal Protocol, facility site validation, and time-out policies.
  • Communicate the patient's current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
  • Administer medications safely and correctly using the eight rights of medication administration.
  • Practice and monitor aseptic technique.
  • Manage patient recovery from anesthesia, including moderate sedation and monitored anesthesia care.
  • Assess patient status at intervals and provide nursing care and monitoring according to facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform interventions to maintain tissue perfusion and the status of the patient's genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, as well as fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances, at or above baseline levels.
  • Prepare scopes for use according to policies, procedures, and manufacturers' instructions for use.
  • Maintain endoscopy instruments and accessories in working order; troubleshoot and recognize malfunctions.
  • Perform interventions to achieve or restore normothermia and protect patients from infection.
  • Assess patient or designated support person's knowledge level and provide education regarding psychosocial response, nutrition, medications, pain, and expected procedural responses.
  • Involve the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting the perioperative plan of care and rehabilitation process.
  • Protect patients' rights, dignity, and privacy and provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal practice standards.
  • Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes and transfer care as applicable.
  • Provide accurate, concise, and pertinent handoff reports to teammates.
  • Delegate tasks according to applicable Nurse Practice Acts, nursing board or professional registration requirements, state laws, and job descriptions.
  • Document episodes of care accurately, timely, completely, and legibly.
  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders and serve on a multidisciplinary patient-care team.
  • Participate in quality review, performance improvement projects, performance appraisal, team meetings, trainings, and daily safety huddles.
  • Maintain required competencies, pursue professional growth, demonstrate fiscal responsibility, and comply with SCA and facility policies, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines.
  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of gastrointestinal, operating room, and/or medical-surgical nursing experience.
  • Specialty certification in gastrointestinal nursing.
