The Department of Veterinary Biosciences (VBS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), in conjunction with the James Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking applicants for a clinical-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Comparative/Laboratory Animal Pathology.

Position Overview

As a member of the Comparative Pathology & Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR), the comparative pathologist will provide pathology expertise and support for investigator-initiated research with an emphasis on preclinical toxicity/efficacy studies and the phenotypic characterization of genetically modified mice to researchers utilizing animal models. The CPDISR is committed to leveraging digital imaging and new analytical approaches to enhance understanding of disease mechanisms and accelerate drug discovery. Thus, expertise in and/or interest to develop expertise in new analytical approaches is highly desirable, and collaboration on research grants is encouraged. In addition to contributing to CPDISR activities, the successful candidate will be actively involved in training of veterinary students and veterinary pathology residents in the OSU-CVM combined pathology residency/Ph.D. program.

The CPDISR (https://cancer.osu.edu/for-cancer-researchers/resources-for-cancer-researchers/shared-resources/comparative-pathology-and-digital-imaging) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-recognized OSUCCC Shared Resource currently supported by two anatomic pathologists specialized in comparative/laboratory animal pathology/phenotyping. Additional CPDISR team members include a prosector, certified medical technologist, certified histotechnologists, and digital pathology team. The CPDISR provides necropsy support, hematologic and biochemical analyses, histochemical, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence services, and digital slide scanning on two scanning platforms. Near-future Shared Resource service plans include incorporation of quantitative image analysis software and consultation/support.

Performance Objectives

The position is predominantly research pathology service with an opportunity for collaborative research (approximately 70%), teaching (approximately 20%) and administrative service (approximately 10%).

RESEARCH SUPPORT AND SCHOLARLY DUTIES

• Pathology support and digital image analysis for clients of the CPDISR, including but not limited to evaluation, photomicrography and scoring of tissue samples (routine and special histochemical stains and immunohistochemistry) with project completion and data provision to CPDISR clients within a standardized time frame   
• Participation in collaborative research projects and applications submitted to external funding agencies by CPDISR clients
• Project consultation and guidance for design of translational animal model studies
• Grant and manuscript assistance and support for pathology results reporting in publications

TEACHING DUTIES 

• Clinical and didactic teaching of professional students and residents in anatomic and clinical pathology
• Participation in Histopathology Seminar, Specialty Pathology Rounds including Laboratory Animal Pathology Rounds, and others where applicable   

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS  

• Participation in college, department, and graduate guidance committee work
• Model and promote a culture of collegiality and academic citizenship
• Adhere to external, university, college, VMC, and department policies, procedures, and guidelines. 

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

• DVM or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution
• Board-certification by or board-eligibility for the American or European College of Veterinary Pathology

Desired:

• PhD
• Demonstrated background in pathobiology of laboratory animals
• Demonstrated expertise and support for investigator-initiated research
• Experience in digital image analysis  
• Experience in, or knowledge to assist in, the development of new analytical approaches
• Evidence of collaboration and/or Co-PI on research grants
• Scholarly track-record consistent with rank
• Experience in the classroom and laboratory teaching of veterinary students
• Experience in the training of anatomic and/or clinical pathology residents
• Evidence of mentoring (e.g. students, trainees, staff, peer)
• Evidence of supporting a culture of collegiality and academic citizenship

Department Information

The Department of Veterinary Biosciences (https://vet.osu.edu/departments-offices/biosciences) was created through the merger of three departments in 1995 - Veterinary Pathobiology, Veterinary Anatomy and Cellular Biology, and Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology.

The department is dedicated to combining pathology with research to address health questions for both humans and animals. We emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, as seen in our involvement with various initiatives, institutes, and centers throughout Ohio State, including the Infectious Disease Institute, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science. We actively engage in research, teaching, diagnostics, and collaborations at local, national, and international levels.

Faculty members in the department are responsible for teaching veterinary students in both the preclinical and clinical phases of the veterinary medicine curriculum through core and elective courses and rotations. They also teach clinical and anatomic pathology residents, interns and residents in medicine and surgery, and graduate students in various scientific disciplines with a focus on cancer and infectious diseases. Faculty members also contribute to undergraduate instruction through select lectures and laboratory teaching.
