Requirements
  • A high school education or equivalent GED.
  • Some knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Skill in using computers, including word processing.
  • Three months of customer service experience, or equivalent phlebotomy experience.
  • Experience as a phlebotomist, consisting of three months of phlebotomy experience, a Clinical Phlebotomy certificate, or six months of experience in a medical field providing patient care that includes drawing blood.
  • A Phlebotomy Certificate must include a minimum of 32 hours of clinical rotation.
  • Basic Life Support training or retraining is required during orientation before providing patient care and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • A valid Oklahoma driver's license with fewer than three points is required for Outreach employees hired into department 40110.
  • The applicant's motor vehicle record must meet NRHS policy criteria, or the applicant must complete Defensive Driving training.
Responsibilities
  • Perform the admission interview process at Laboratory Outreach Service Centers or use information provided by outreach clients during specimen collection or pickup.
  • Ensure that Medicare, insurance, and managed care requirements are met before registration.
  • Respond to patient inquiries.
  • Obtain blood specimens on or off site according to established procedures, time frames, and safety requirements.
  • Obtain specimens requiring special collection procedures according to established procedures, time frames, and safety requirements.
  • Perform diagnostic electrocardiograms on outpatients and therapeutic INR quality-control and testing procedures.
  • Collect and process urine specimens.
  • Collect and process specimens other than blood or urine.
  • Assist in the laboratory area.
  • Act as a resource for laboratory information.
  • Maintain current knowledge of insurance regulations and Medicare requirements.
  • Order and maintain supplies at the par level.
  • Perform other laboratory requirements and maintain proper telephone etiquette.
