Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • Previous experience and CNA license preferred
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support certification by the end of the orientation period and maintain it
  • Certifies in Basic Electrocardiography with 80% score or greater so may flex in Monitor Technician role as required by unit population

Responsibilities
  • Provide and assist with personal hygiene for patients including baths, shampoos, oral hygiene, back and skin care, toileting, and shaving male patients
  • Take and record vital signs and other data; report abnormal data, patient problems or changes in status to nurse
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff; pass linens, change beds, maintain patient rooms and unit in an orderly fashion
  • Answer call lights and prioritize patient requests
  • Assist patients with meals; position trays and feed patients unable to feed themselves; document intake
  • Perform and document simple treatments as directed by RN such as enemas, sitz baths, oral suctioning, simple dressing changes, and Glucose Monitor
  • Assist patients with movement and ambulating; turn and position patients; help into wheelchairs or carts; document
  • Provide comfort to patients and families; help alleviate fears and ensure privacy
  • Collect and deliver specimens, equipment, meal trays, supplies, pharmacy items, etc.
  • Assist other patient care personnel in giving patient care; assist with admission and discharge; provide post mortem care
  • Enter computer orders as assigned by the Charge Nurse
  • Clean and care for equipment in patient care areas
  • Orient new employees to the role of acute care assistant
  • Reconcile daily charges at patient level detail; monitor gross charges daily; identify and investigate variances; verify system interface daily; correct errors
  • Process and maintain electronic medical records and patient charts; assemble chart materials for new admissions; process discharge charts and transfers; forward discharge charts
  • Process paperwork such as transfers, admissions, and discharges; maintain ADT sheet and assignment board
  • Communicate with physicians and physician offices to obtain test results and arrange appointments post-discharge
  • Coordinate with hospital departments to request supplies and services; schedule appointments
  • Participate in nursing and hospital committees, quality improvement activities, unit staff meetings, and training; implement new policies and procedures
  • Follow downtime processes
  • Maintain access to unit medication rooms for stocking and retrieving supplies
  • Demonstrate commitment to outstanding customer service; adhere to laws, regulations, policies, and ethics
  • Maintain safe workplace; follow safe work practices and use protective equipment
Desired Qualifications
  • CNA license preferred
  • Basic Life Support certification required (already in requirements)
  • Basic Electrocardiography certification with 80 percent score or greater (to flex into Monitor Tech role)
  • Monitor Tech role eligibility based on unit population
  • Experience with Cerner, OMNI, Rad-Net, Pharm-Net, Quest software could be considered desirable
  • Experience or coursework in healthcare environment or patient care settings could be desirable
