Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Business Management, or a related clinical field is required.
  • At least 10 years of experience in information systems and electronic health records, including at least 5 years of senior leadership experience implementing and managing integrated electronic health records in a complex health system is required.
  • Epic electronic medical record experience is required.
  • The candidate must have a demonstrated track record leading health informatics and clinical applications in a large, dynamic health system, with measurable outcomes in performance, satisfaction, and operational improvement.
  • The candidate must be able to lead cross-functional teams, influence senior leadership, and drive clinical system and process redesign in complex, matrixed environments.
  • The candidate must have significant experience in strategic planning, information technology transformation, and application portfolio management, including managing multiple concurrent enterprise implementations.
  • The candidate must have experience managing multimillion-dollar clinical technology budgets and vendor portfolios.
  • The candidate must be able to develop and articulate a clear technology vision, translate it into actionable roadmaps and measurable outcomes, build trust with clinicians and clinical leadership, operationalize complex application and informatics strategies, develop high-performing teams, navigate resistance and conflict, improve outcomes and experience, and use metrics and outcomes data for decision-making.

Responsibilities
  • Define and champion the clinical applications and informatics strategy, positioning Epic and digital health capabilities as enablers of clinical care, research, and education.
  • Develop and maintain a 2–3-year roadmap across clinical excellence, research enablement, academic training, digital maturity, and statewide integration.
  • Align clinical technology investments with system-level strategies across the university, health system, and statewide initiatives.
  • Lead clinical and informatics governance structures and coordinate decision-making across Epic, clinical applications, and optimization programs.
  • Coordinate clinical application roadmaps with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, data and analytics, and digital strategy.
  • Ensure alignment of clinical technology investments with regulatory requirements and industry standards, including CMS, ONC, Joint Commission, HL7 FHIR, and IHE.
  • Oversee enhancement, deployment, and lifecycle management of the Epic electronic medical record and associated clinical applications across clinical domains.
  • Drive Epic optimization and maturity, including HIMSS maturity model performance, Epic Gold Star and Honor Roll standing, and adoption of best practices.
  • Establish integration strategies and standardization across regions and Community Connect affiliates.
  • Oversee specialty clinical systems, including pharmacy, cardiology, radiology, laboratory, and perioperative information systems.
  • Partner with Epic account teams, third-party vendors, and peer health systems to maximize the clinical application portfolio.
  • Provide strategic leadership for clinical informatics across inpatient, ambulatory, and ancillary care.
  • Build relationships with clinicians statewide to understand frontline needs and ensure clinical systems support users.
  • Lead the design and governance of clinical workflows, order sets, documentation templates, decision support tools, and user interface standards.
  • Champion emerging technologies such as ambient intelligence and artificial intelligence-assisted documentation to reduce cognitive burden and support clinician wellness.
  • Build and scale physician builder and informaticist programs.
  • Oversee clinical data governance and the integrity of clinical data assets used for dashboards, population health management, and research.
  • Collaborate with data and analytics teams to develop clinical surveillance tools, sepsis alerting, quality dashboards, and performance improvement platforms.
  • Support alignment of clinical systems with translational research and institutional review board data-use requirements.
  • Advance virtual care capabilities, patient engagement tools, digital health solutions, unified communications, and patient omni-channel experiences.
  • Integrate digital tools with the electronic medical record and other clinical systems while ensuring reliability, security, and interoperability.
  • Drive patient experiences across digital intake, self-scheduling, patient portals, mobile applications, feedback tools, wayfinding, and post-visit engagement platforms.
  • Partner with revenue cycle leadership to optimize charge capture, coding accuracy, claims processing, prior authorization workflows, and denial management.
  • Lead structured optimization sprint cycles using data-driven intake, stakeholder feedback, and agile delivery practices.
  • Own and operate the Care Technology Council for clinical application prioritization, demand management, and cross-functional decision-making.
  • Chair or co-chair the Epic Joint Operating Committee and drive agenda alignment, escalation management, and accountability.
  • Design and improve priority and demand intake funnels for technology requests and enhancements.
  • Manage capacity planning across clinical applications and informatics teams.
  • Establish operational oversight and reporting structures, including executive dashboards, portfolio health metrics, and milestone reporting.
  • Ensure governance processes provide accountability, transparency, escalation paths, service-level agreements, and feedback loops.
  • Advise the Chief Information Officer, clinical executives, campus leaders, and statewide partners on technology.
  • Act as the liaison between Information Solutions and clinical communities across MUSC missions and regions.
  • Represent the Chief Information Officer's office in clinical governance forums, medical executive committees, quality councils, and board-level briefings.
  • Lead, develop, and inspire clinical applications and informatics teams.
  • Mentor clinical informatics fellows, graduate students, and early-career information technology professionals.
  • Drive clinician satisfaction and KLAS provider engagement scores through system usability initiatives.
  • Advance health equity and statewide impact through clinical technology leadership.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, Informatics, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • An advanced clinical degree such as Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Doctor of Pharmacy with formal medical informatics training is preferred but not required.
  • Community Connect experience is preferred.
  • Epic certification in one or more clinical modules is preferred.
  • CHCIO, CPHIMS, FCHIME, FAMIA, or an equivalent professional certification is preferred.
  • Experience leading clinical informatics programs in an NCI-designated cancer center, Level I Trauma center, or comparable quaternary academic medical center is preferred.
  • Familiarity with MUSC's clinical and academic programs or experience in a public university-affiliated health system is preferred.
  • A background in or strong working knowledge of health data science, machine learning applications in clinical care, or artificial intelligence governance frameworks is preferred.
  • Experience with FHIR-based interoperability, CommonWell or Carequality participation, and state health information exchange engagement is preferred.
