Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Two years of experience in a strong customer service environment are required.
  • One year of hospital registration experience is preferred.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform the essential functions of the job, particularly activities affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Knowledge of basic registration/access functions and insurance procedures is required.
  • Proficient computer skills and the ability to learn and navigate multiple software programs are required.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a customer-service-focused manner.
  • The candidate must be able to multitask, solve problems, handle detail work accurately and rapidly, and remain calm in stressful situations.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain and enter accurate patient demographic and insurance information in the electronic health record at facility entry points.
  • Perform cashiering functions and collect required co-payments, deductibles, and coinsurance.
  • Perform medical-necessity checks to ensure compliance with Medicare guidelines.
  • Adhere to departmental, hospital, governmental, and healthcare licensing-agency requirements related to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Obtain and record patient information by interviewing patients, family members, and physicians, and ensure correct insurance plan codes are used for billing.
  • Explain consent forms, obtain signatures, and answer questions professionally.
  • Address patient issues and concerns and alert management to unusual or difficult situations affecting service.
  • Protect patient health information according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act guidelines and use patient identifiers to correctly identify patients and medical records.
  • Meet departmental goals, including registration accuracy and productivity targets.
  • Ensure ordered services meet applicable medical-necessity criteria.
  • Verify insurance to determine out-of-pocket expenses, collect and receipt payments, offer payment options when applicable, and balance the cash drawer daily.
  • Organize time effectively, prioritize work, minimize incidental overtime, and assist team members during changing workloads.
  • Suggest process improvements to streamline patient flow and continue developing beyond baseline competencies.
