American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers

Partnering for a more circular economy.

Partnering for a more circular economy. April 22, 2026 Across the petrochemical industry, companies are recognizing that building a circular economy for plastics isn't a solo endeavor - it's a collective mission. Through strategic partnerships, manufacturers are taking a comprehensive approach to increasing recycling and tackling hard-to-recycle materials across sectors. Companies are tackling specialized plastic products with unique challenges to collecting, sorting and recycling. American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers see challenges like this in healthcare plastics, which can be at risk of contamination, or have products made up of multiple materials that can make them difficult to sort and break down. Westlake Chemical, in partnership with Houston Methodist Hospital, launched the "Choose Pink" campaign - Houston's first healthcare-focused PVC recycling program. By collecting items like masks, saline bags, and oxygen tubing, and transforming them into new products such as exercise mats and cord protectors, Westlake is proving that even specialized plastics can be reintegrated into the circular economy. More companies are teaming up to find new ways to make products that are designed to be reused or recycled back into themselves - rather than thrown away. One example: Dow's MobilityScience(TM) team has partnered with Jaguar Land Rover and Adient to recycle car seat foam. Together, they've created a system that takes polyurethane foam from old car seats, recycles it and turns it into brand new foam for new seats - instead of sending it to the landfill. It's the first time this kind of closed-loop recycling content is expected to be used in automotive production. Together, these initiatives reflect a broader trend - petrochemical companies are joining forces across sectors to build the infrastructure, technologies and systems needed for a circular economy for plastics. Whether through community engagement, cross-industry innovation or investment in advanced facilities, these partnerships are reshaping how materials flow through society. "Building a more circular economy for plastics requires more than innovation - it demands partnership. Across our industry, companies are coming together to rethink how materials are collected, sorted, recycled and reused. We're not just reducing waste - we're creating systems that keep valuable materials in use and deliver real environmental benefits." - Rob Benedict, Vice President Midstream and Petrochemicals, AFPM Media Contact: Ericka Perryman About AFPM: The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is the leading trade association representing the makers of the fuels that keep American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers moving, the petrochemicals that are the essential building blocks for modern life, and the midstream companies that get its feedstocks and products where they need to go. Not financial advice. 02/23/2026 - 08:30 AM PLYMOUTH, Mich., Feb. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Adient (NYSE: ADNT), a global leader in automotive seating, today announced its latest breakthrough innovation, Sculpted Soft Trim. This unique product offers fresh aesthetics and new design opportunities for vehicle seats. Sculpted Soft Trim is a soft, breathable, formed trim solution that can be used to create large trim panels or smaller, simpler parts like rear seat child seat anchor trim covers, armrests, headrests or other intricate parts. It utilizes an automated process to form these parts, reducing the amount of sewing required compared to today's trim covers. Sculpted Soft Trim offers advantages in areas of complex sewing and concave surfaces, reducing trim patterns and sewing labor while improving challenging craftsmanship executions. Details can be added to seat trim through that were previously not achievable with traditional seat trim methods, offering new levels of design freedom. For example, with standard cut and sew, child seat anchor locations in the rear seats are an area where craftsmanship can be a challenge. Now, one Sculpted Soft Trim pattern can replace what historically took up to twelve individual patterns and sew lines to create - with a much higher level of craftsmanship. Additionally, Sculpted Soft Trim allows for firmness to be varied for the best look and feel for the application. Among the many benefits and uses of Sculpted Soft Trim: * Enables easy execution across a wide range of fabric and vinyl materials * Complex 3-dimensional shape and concavity is achievable, without washing out grain detail * Detailed parts such as belts or child seat anchor pockets can be replaced with the trim to reduce sew labor and improve craftsmanship, with consistent results * Embossed/debossed textural patterns can be added easily in the same tool and process and, additionally, graphics and badging can be easily created for customization or to differentiate between brands * Dissimilar materials can be pre-sewn and formed, offering a wide variety of trim options "Sculpted Soft Trim fundamentally changes what's possible in seat trim design by combining premium aesthetics with meaningful manufacturing efficiency," said Mike Maddelein, Adient's vice president of engineering in the Americas. "With cycle times reduced to roughly 50% of traditional forming methods, this technology delivers both speed and quality. In addition, decorative sewing, quilting and embossed or debossed features introduce another level of specialization, all executed with tight tolerance control to ensure consistent, high-end craftsmanship at scale." Adient's Sculpted Soft Trim is currently available globally and will be in production on seats in multiple OEMs' vehicles this year.
